Her Story
About Dr.
I've been in radio and media since 1999 when my husband and I started with a show on terrestrial radio. In 2020, I transitioned to internet radio with my own radio station. I also have a podcast called God's Glory Brought. In my day-to-day work, I'm an executive secretary where I wear a lot of hats. I'm also a minister and very active at my church with administration. Music is another important part of my life as I'm a vocalist as well. I hold a master's degree in public administration from University of Phoenix (2011) and a bachelor's in business management from the same institution (2009). I continue to stay current in my field by taking small classes and workshops on what's new in media, learning about the changes, the do's and don'ts in radio and media.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Dr.
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to my mom, who trained me early on to be a great leader and to not be afraid to walk in authority on certain things. She raised us up after my father died when I was young, and I just remember her teaching me - you do this, you do that. I was paying attention, and I really didn't realize how much I paid attention as I got older. I saw the leadership skills that she instilled within me because I took on a big role as the older sibling. I only have one younger sister, and I was always finding myself taking the lead in certain things to help my mom, or to do things around the house, or to even work with finances and stuff like that. So I took the lead in a lot of that, and I see that now. My mom played a good role in it.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Never underestimate yourself. You can do a lot of things once you put your mind and heart to it, and just don't give up on it. Basically, never underestimate yourself, because a lot of times, especially we as women, we do that. We think, oh, I can't do that, or I'm at the age where I just... it's impossible. Certain things like that, so never underestimate yourself. You'd be surprised what you can do and how things will take off once you persevere in that area.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
You can do what others may deem impossible. A lot of times, the industry kind of looks like it's more male-oriented, but women have played a significant role in radio and media for years. And a lot of times they hadn't really got the attention that was deserved of them for their work. That's what I would say.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The biggest challenges would probably be locating the necessary finances needed, or grants, or certain things like that to spearhead your growth in the radio and media.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Integrity and loyalty.
