Her Story

About Celin

My first breakthrough into the pharmaceutical industry was in Canada, where I joined AstraZeneca and was given one of a few of their most pivotal trials, which led to approvals into various indications like ovarian cancer and lung cancer. I worked with AstraZeneca, providing my leadership and expertise and working with a cross-functional team for around 4 years. After that, I moved on to Roche Genentech in Canada itself, where I was leading their programs into adaptive immune oncology studies, which was a step further from what I did in AstraZeneca. I worked with them for around 3 years, and then we had to move to the United States in 2022 because I wanted to work in the South. I started my first career here with Bristol-Myers Squibb, working on one of their pivotal programs on cell therapy. I was fortunate enough to have the experience of going through the whole FDA inspection and getting the product approved, accelerated approval. In between all these, I also had a feeling that I should be giving back to the society, so I was teaching and was a professor in New York University in Canada and also in one of the leading universities in Mumbai, where I taught about clinical research to graduates. I have done a few publications, really four or five of them, and I am a current volunteer for Clinical Research Association of Canada, where I do multiple webinars. I was recently invited even by Hyegia Group to provide a webinar on cell therapy, upcoming challenges and decisions. The whole time, the motivation was seeing cancer patients suffering through this dreadful disease and not having an option to make a decision for their own life. That was the trigger point to work in this field and the whole passion that drives me to come to work every day.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would say just look for the right opportunity that motivates you, like you feel connected to that specific job. That is one of the most important things that you will need, the passion and the connection. Everything else will just flow, because with your passion, you'll try to make things better, you'll try to break that ice where the problem is, and you'll try to just make things go perfectly fine if you have the passion for your job and your role. I would also say that we shouldn't be focused on what we know about or what we think about. We should always be open to trying different opportunities. When I was starting out, I always had a mindset that I only wanted to stick to a hospital setting because I would flourish in that environment, and I kept rejecting all the other industrial opportunities because I was more focused into academics. Now when I see myself at this stage, I always think that I wasn't thinking right at that time. There is always something there on the other side, and we should always explore and never pull ourselves back because of uncertainty. We should just jump right into it.
