Her Story

About Chara

I am an experienced, early childhood education professional with over 15 years of service across corporate, private and faith-based organizations. For the past decade, I have served in administrative leadership, providing oversight in daily operations, staff supervision, and family engagement. My professional foundation includes hands-on classroom experience as an infant and toddler teacher, enrichment specialist in literacy and music education programs. I am currently the Director for our early care department, ages 2 months to 2 1/2 years old. We specialize in assessment, development referrals, parent conferences and staff development. I am committed to leadership and service within the broader community. I currently serve as a Board member for Wise Knowledge LLC, a youth development and mentoring program, as well as the Providers Council of Indiana through United Way of Central Indiana. I am partnered with Butler University Early Childhood Education Department as a cooperative teacher, for the second year, mentoring and facilitating adult learners through their coursework and "on the job" skill development. As a member of my local church, I volunteer in the Children's music ministry as a praise and worship leader and choir member. Music has always been a love and equal passion of mine to share with children and use as a learning tool in the classroom.

Ten minutes with Chara

01What do you attribute your success to?

My mother, Sherra Gaines Hunt. She has been a significant source of inspiration as she modeled for years what it looks like to lead with both excellence and faith. Watching her balance professional responsibility with ministry and service to families has left a lasting impression on my life. I developed a deep and enduring love for children and families; this has driven my passion and belief to bridge educators and families to strengthen our communities and commit to collaboration for the betterment of the children.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

As a young, excited toddler teacher, fresh out of college, I was so eager to do and learn anything that had to do with ECE. I remember my director giving me small task outside of the classroom, answering questions and showing me how to complete tours with families. She told me, "Chara you are going to go far in this field, you are passionate and flexible" I have held onto those words and practice throughout my entire career. I understood early on that there is always something to learn and work to be done! I have always been willing to do both and it has carried me a long way.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

The same advice given to me, learn as much as you can and stay solution oriented. If you do not have the answer, don't be afraid to go the distance to find it. Never tell a family "I don't know" , being solution oriented builds trust with families and extends our work and connection to providing services that make a lasting impact. My Executive Director has coined a phrase, "Do what you love, love what you do." This moto truly is the heart of ECE if you choose this path. Falling in love with the work is essential when times are hard, we have to continue to be the bridge for families and the services they need.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Currently the most pressing matter is insufficient funding and investment. Many contributing factors to the withdrawal of government funds in early childcare and it has greatly impacted the field in every sector. The lack of funding and removal of support has limited program capacity, quality support and resources for children and families. Over the years high turnover and workforce shortages have also presented a challenge to the field. Low pay, limited benefits and fear of program closures have affected maintaining quality staff.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Faith, purpose, service, balance, integrity and collaboration. These 5 standards truly guide me in everything that I do. I believe I am called and assigned to my work and personal life. I don't believe in saying yes to just anything, I can say yes to everything that God has graced me for. Leading with transparency, accountability, and service attitude is a style that I aspire to hold onto for a lifetime.
