Her Story

About Dr.Julie

I have been in Student Affairs and Higher Education for 30 years, starting right after I graduated from college. My guiding principles have always been around centering the student that you have in front of you, not the one you wish you had, and centering the people that are with you doing the work, because if you burn them out, nothing works. I describe myself as a system designer for students, and that's been a through-line my entire career. Whether it's a housing project, an entire strategic plan, or a university or systems approach to overall student success, it's about who do we have, what do we know about them, where are their friction points, how are we fixing that and testing it, and then how are we scaling it. That's where I stepped out into this consulting world, and that's what I offer up to institutions now. I'm the President and Senior Partner of Edgefield Group, the organization that we founded. I do executive coaching for senior leaders, facilitated workshops, keynote addresses, executive advisory calls where folks put me on retainer just to say they need to be able to call me because of the experience and demonstrated outcomes I have in this kind of work. I also handle all the administrative pieces, from sending out invoices and proposals to putting together marketing materials. You're on a tight ship with 3 or 4 people, and that's it, but that in and of itself is fun too. It's a lot of founder and entrepreneurial energy, and I thrive in that space.

Ten minutes with Dr.Julie

01What do you attribute your success to?

I have a really strong work ethic that I got from my mother. She put herself through law school, she joined a law firm and then kept it running for 34 years, and then decided to retire and go back to school again. It's amazing to me. So that work ethic, and I think connected to this endless desire to understand and to learn, that sense of curiosity drives me, too. And then I think the third is that I just want to give back. I want to make things better for the people that follow. I think this has been an amazing career to do that.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Feedback is a gift. People are always so afraid to get feedback, or to give it, especially if you're in a supervisory situation, and if you can reframe it as, you know, feedback is truly a gift. If people didn't care about you, they would say absolutely nothing and just let you fail. And to keep that in mind, no matter what the feedback is. It could be a student who's really mad at me and they don't know how to express it, but I have to remember that the reason they're upset is they care about something, so I gotta figure out what that is. Or a staff member that is frustrated, or my supervisor who's giving me feedback, maybe not in a great way, it's like, okay, okay, let me see if I can find that nugget of truth in there, right? So that I can do a better job. Or, you know, at least be aware of something that I wasn't aware of before, because that's how we grow.
