Her Story

About Isabel

I've been working with FiveCore Media and The Globe through my college extracurriculars for 3 years now, and I'm in my fourth year starting this semester. At FiveCore Media, an Emmy-winning production company based on the Goshen College campus, I started as a production assistant like anyone would, and through proving myself and my skills over time, I got promoted to student producer - the highest position a student can achieve within the company. The company focuses on giving hands-on experiences to students in the filmmaking industry who are interested in pursuing a career in this area. As a student producer, I oversee each client project our company takes on, help other staff follow up on their own projects, and work on my own projects in partnership with our producer Kyle Hufford. I'm also part of the 91.1 The Globe staff, our award-winning college radio station that has a TV side as well. I started as a multimedia journalist and this year began my position as news director. In this role, I'm responsible for overseeing packages, making sure they are fact-checked, have good background stories, good scripts, and good quality B-roll videos. Since we have students at different levels of their journey - some freshmen who aren't very experienced and some seniors - I try to help those who feel less qualified for some activities to make them feel more capable and productive, offering any kind of help I can. I balance both roles part-time because I have to manage classes and I'm also a soccer athlete at Goshen College.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

It is a complicated field, I'm not gonna lie - the film industry is majority male, and we sometimes get overlooked as women, and people don't expect as much of us as they would expect from men in our field. But that kind of makes us better and special in that sense, just because we think differently, we act differently, and we have a different sense of creativity that most people I work with, most men that I work with, don't have. So just use that to your advantage, and don't let people tell you what you can and cannot do. Just do you, and then the rewards will come.
