Her Interview
Ten minutes with Isabella Mae
01What do you attribute your success to?
I’d attribute my success to a combination of dedication, continuous learning, resilience, and a genuine passion for payroll and tax compliance. I’ve always believed that experience is most valuable when you use it not only to solve problems, but also to improve processes and help others grow.
Throughout my career, I’ve challenged myself to keep learning, adapt to changes in technology and regulations, and never become complacent. I also credit the incredible support of my family, especially my husband, who has encouraged me throughout my professional and educational journey.
Most importantly, I’ve tried to lead by example—showing my daughters, my family, and the people I work with that hard work, perseverance, and believing in yourself can open doors you may never have imagined.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I’ve ever received is: never stop learning, and never be afraid to share what you know.
Payroll and tax are constantly changing, so I’ve learned that experience alone isn’t enough—you have to stay curious, embrace new technology, understand evolving regulations, and continue developing your skills. At the same time, true leadership is about using that knowledge to help others succeed.
I’ve also learned not to let a job title define my value. Your reputation is built through your work, your integrity, how you handle challenges, and how you treat the people around you. After many years in this profession, I still approach every challenge as an opportunity to learn something new and become better at what I do.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
The struggle is real, but perseverance is essential. Empower yourself, reach out to your friends and family for support, and understand that it is okay to ask for help when you need it. Speak up and make use of your support system rather than trying to handle everything on your own.
I would tell young women entering the payroll and tax industry to never underestimate the value of their voice, their knowledge, or their potential.
Learn everything you can, ask questions, find mentors, and don’t be afraid to take on challenges before you feel completely ready. Payroll and tax are complex fields, and confidence comes from experience—but you gain that experience by being willing to step forward.
I would also encourage women to advocate for themselves. Know the value you bring to the table, celebrate your accomplishments, and never allow someone else to define what you are capable of achieving.
Most importantly, build your career with integrity and purpose. Support other women along the way, share your knowledge, and remember that success is even more meaningful when you help create opportunities for the next generation.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges—and opportunities—in payroll and payroll tax today is the pace of change. Regulations are constantly evolving across federal, state, and local jurisdictions, while organizations are increasingly managing employees across multiple states and even countries. Staying compliant while maintaining accuracy and meeting strict deadlines has never been more complex.
At the same time, technology, automation, and AI are creating tremendous opportunities. We can automate repetitive processes, strengthen reconciliations and controls, identify discrepancies earlier, and give payroll professionals more time to focus on compliance, strategy, and the employee experience.
I believe the greatest opportunity is finding the right balance between technology and human expertise. Technology can make payroll more efficient, but experienced payroll professionals still provide the judgment, knowledge, and accountability needed to ensure people are paid correctly and organizations remain compliant.
Payroll is no longer simply a back-office function—it is becoming an increasingly strategic part of the business.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Integrity, family, dedication, and helping others are the values that guide me both professionally and personally.
In my work, integrity and accountability are especially important. Payroll and tax require an enormous amount of trust—employees and organizations depend on us to get things right. I believe in taking ownership, doing the right thing even when no one is watching, and never compromising accuracy or compliance.
Personally, family is at the heart of everything I do. My husband, daughters, and family have been an incredible source of support throughout my career and educational journey. They have also been a major reason I’ve continued to challenge myself and pursue new goals.
Finally, I value continuous learning and giving back. No matter how much experience we have, there is always something new to learn. I believe knowledge becomes even more valuable when we share it, mentor others, and help the next generation recognize what they are capable of achieving.
