Her Story

About Karin

I grew up in New York City and initially wanted to attend NYU, but my parents insisted I leave the city. I applied to Boston University's film department as my first choice and got in, which really started cultivating my love of the visual arts. After graduating, I spent about 6 months in San Francisco before returning to New York. A friend who had been doing graphics research for the vertebrate paleontology department at the Museum of Natural History was going back to Columbia for her master's and recommended me for her position. I was temping at the time and getting disillusioned, so I took the job and did that for about 2 years. From there, I became a photo editor at a publishing company, then at Psychology Today magazine, and eventually worked as photo editor and photo director at Bon Appetit, Men's Health, and New York Magazine. When my husband got transferred to California, I had a hard time finding work since so much of the magazine industry is in New York. I interviewed with Bon Appetit and they needed a producer rather than a photo editor, so I made that transition. They sent me everywhere from Italy to the Bahamas to Canada, and I saw 42 of the 50 states. When Conde Nast shut down Gourmet and closed the LA office of Bon Appetit, everyone who had been hiring me got laid off. I decided to continue as an independent producer since I had met so many photographers and agents by that point. My production company became incorporated in 2005, and I've been doing this for over 20 years now. The majority of my work still comes from ad agencies in New York. Recently, I've become more interested in giving back to the community. I serve on the Encinitas Library Board and am currently curating a museum exhibit on the history of skateboarding in Vista, where I now live.

Ten minutes with Karin

01What do you attribute your success to?

I work hard, and I really think that you are as good as your word. If you say something, then you do it. You need to be reliable, come prepared, be organized, and always try to think 5 steps ahead of the game so that when something comes up, you're better equipped to deal with it. I always tell my crew, if you don't know something, come to me and we'll figure it out. But if you try to do the fake it till you make it and you mess things up, I will not hire you again. I like transparency and for us to be on the same page. I think those elements really shine through in the long run. I don't think there's really any shortcuts. There's a difference between getting experience and knowledge and learning and then applying it, versus saying you know something when you don't. We're all in situations where we need to figure things out, but I'm not going to say I know something if I don't.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

If you're in college and you can get an internship, I think that's one of the best ways to get your foot into the door of the industry, I really do. If you really want to work on the film side of things, then try to get work as a production assistant. That will give you a really great overall view. You'll start meeting people, you can make connections, and good PAs are recognized by producers right off the bat. They make a world of difference. The PAs that I hire, I pay them a little bit more, but they're like my right-hand guys. I know I can rely on them. I know I don't have to tell them what to do or ask them. They're able to think out of the box, they take initiative. If you're just reliable and responsible, you can do really well getting your foot in the door as a PA. I will definitely say that.
