About Kathryn
Dr. Kathryn Washington is a tenured Associate Professor in the Educational Leadership Department at Lamar University with more than 34 years of experience in education and is currently completing her 35th year in the field. Her career spans every level of education, including 17 years in K-12 leadership roles across public school systems. Although her passion began in the mathematics classroom, where she spent years teaching Math and Science, her journey into leadership allowed her to expand her impact beyond students to educators, schools, and communities.
Today, Dr. Washington teaches aspiring principals and educational leaders from across Texas, the nation, and around the world through Lamar University’s fully online Educational Leadership program. Her students represent diverse educational settings, including public, private, and charter schools, with learners joining her classes from countries such as Australia, Canada, Africa, and China. In addition to teaching, her work includes mentoring future leaders, conducting research, engaging in scholarship and service, and contributing to university initiatives and committees.
A passionate researcher and advocate for educational leadership, Dr. Washington recently completed a major research study on stakeholder's perspectives on the four-day school week, which included surveys and interviews with approximately 120 school board members, administrators, and teachers. She also founded and launched the College of Education’s first academic journal, the Journal of Innovations in Education and Human Development: Research and Practice, which debuted in February and earned her recognition for innovation and leadership.
Dr. Washington is actively involved in national and international educational organizations, including the American Educational Research Association and the International Council of Professors of Educational Leadership, where she was recently elected to serve on the Executive Board. Her greatest passion is inspiring, mentoring, and empowering the next generation of women in educational leadership. Through her research and leadership, she advocates for greater representation of women in executive educational roles such as superintendent and assistant superintendent positions, helping future leaders develop the confidence, voice, and skills needed to lead with purpose and impact.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Kathryn
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to faith, education, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to service and lifelong learning. Throughout my journey as an educator, administrator, and professor, I have learned that perseverance, strong relationships, and a passion for helping others create opportunities for growth and impact. Education has empowered me to lead, advocate, and inspire others, while resilience has strengthened my ability to navigate challenges and continue serving students, educators, and communities with purpose.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
One of the most meaningful pieces of advice I received was that leadership expands your ability to make a difference. While teaching allows you to impact students directly, leadership provides an opportunity to influence schools, families, educators, and entire communities. That advice inspired me to pursue leadership roles in education and higher education where I could mentor future leaders, advocate for equity and excellence, and create lasting positive change.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Dream boldly, lead confidently, and never stop learning. I encourage young women to embrace every opportunity for growth and remember that leaders are readers and lifelong learners. Lead with integrity, compassion, and humility, and never underestimate the value of servant leadership. Most importantly, stay grounded in your purpose and your “why.” Education is about transforming lives, and your voice, perspective, and leadership are needed now more than ever.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges and/or opportunities in education today is developing and empowering the next generation of diverse leaders, particularly women in educational leadership. Much of my research focuses on women superintendents, women in leadership, and topics such as self-care and relationship building to address the unique challenges women face in educational spaces. Although progress has been made, women remain underrepresented in many executive leadership roles, and there is still important work to do in helping women learn how to navigate, negotiate, and advocate for themselves and others. Women are often hesitant to speak up for themselves, so mentorship, advocacy, and leadership development are essential in cultivating confidence, leadership skills, and a strong voice. My involvement with organizations such as the Texas Council of Women School Executives has allowed me to support and encourage aspiring women leaders. As a past president, I was committed to fostering collaboration, creating leadership opportunities, and preparing future leaders for the evolving challenges and opportunities in education today.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Service, integrity, excellence, faith, and empowerment are the values that guide both my professional and personal life. I believe strongly in servant leadership and in using every opportunity to uplift others, mentor future leaders, and create meaningful change. Family is incredibly important to me, and I value spending quality time with loved ones. As a preacher’s kid, faith and church have always been central to my life, and growing up with a mother who was a musician instilled in me a deep appreciation for music and culture. I also believe in the importance of balance and making time for the things that keep me grounded and fulfilled, whether that’s traveling with my husband, enjoying a dinner and a movie, or simply being with family. These moments allow me to recharge so I can continue serving others with authenticity, compassion, and purpose.
