About Katie

Katie Stratman is a nonprofit development professional and mission-driven leader based in Indianapolis, Indiana. She currently serves as Development Manager at The Children's TherAplay Foundation, Inc., where she has dedicated more than a decade to expanding access to equine-assisted therapies for children with physical, developmental, and cognitive challenges. A graduate of Purdue University with a Bachelor of Science in Health Promotions, Katie began her career in child nutrition and community health before transitioning fully into nonprofit development and fundraising.

Her early professional experience includes work with the Northern Illinois Food Bank, where she supported child nutrition programs, training initiatives, and statewide service coordination. She later worked as a Health Coach with American Specialty Health, gaining experience in behavior change, client engagement, and wellness support. These roles helped shape her strengths in communication, program coordination, and relationship-building, which she now applies to nonprofit fundraising and donor stewardship.

At Children’s TherAplay, Katie has progressed from volunteer coordination into development leadership, where she now leads fundraising strategy, donor relations, and community engagement efforts. Her work has contributed to significant organizational growth, including increased fundraising capacity and expanded services for children and families. Known for her collaborative approach and passion for service, she is committed to building meaningful connections that sustain and grow the organization’s mission to help every child thrive through therapeutic care.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Katie

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to my longevity with the organization, which has allowed me to build deep institutional knowledge over more than 10 years. I also rely on strong relationship-building skills with donors and community members, which have been essential in sustaining engagement and support. In addition, I value the mentorship I’ve received from organizational leadership, along with a consistent focus on ensuring that fundraising efforts directly support children’s therapy and meaningful outcomes.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I’ve received came from a mentor who encouraged me to be confident in making the ask. I learned not to hesitate in inviting others to join and support the mission, and to approach fundraising and engagement with clarity and conviction.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

For someone entering nonprofit work, I would encourage you to do thoughtful research on the type of mission you want to support and be honest with yourself about what you are truly passionate about and how you want to serve the community. Aligning with an organization whose values match your own is key, as that sense of purpose is what sustains you in the work over time. In nonprofit, it is important to have a strong “why,” since the work is driven by impact rather than financial gain. For those interested in fundraising and development, I would also recommend building relationships early by connecting with experienced fundraisers, seeking mentorship, and actively participating in networking opportunities to better understand the field. Ultimately, this work is rooted in relationships, continuous learning, and a genuine commitment to the mission.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The fundraising landscape is constantly evolving, which presents both challenges and opportunities. Different generations have distinct giving habits and engagement preferences, so staying informed about donor trends and shifts in community philanthropy is an ongoing priority. At the same time, economic conditions can significantly influence giving patterns, making adaptability essential in sustaining support for nonprofit missions. I see this continuous change as one of the greatest challenges in the field, but also as an opportunity to innovate, strengthen donor relationships, and develop more responsive and effective fundraising strategies.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Serving others, purpose-driven work, relationship-building, and a deep commitment to improving children’s access to therapy are the values that guide me both professionally and personally. I approach my work with a strong focus on impact and service, ensuring that every effort contributes meaningfully to the mission and the communities we support.
