Her Story
About Kay
I transitioned to higher education after spending 6 years in the finance industry, searching for a role that would give me a sense of purpose where I could make an impact on a day-to-day basis and use my education and background to bring success to an organization. I wanted flexibility in my day-to-day life but also a sense of purpose, and when this role came across my email, I applied, got the job, and fell in love with it. In my current position, I handle onboarding for all staff across 10 different departments within our division, assist the Vice Chancellor in his day-to-day operations making sure the ship is sailing, manage about 6 student workers, and plan major events including retreats, awards ceremonies, and holiday parties. My main area of expertise is coaching, training and development. One of my most rewarding experiences was being a keynote speaker at the Administrative Professionals Conference for the entire USC Columbia system, where I spoke about day-to-day life as an executive assistant and helped administrative professionals navigate challenges they face. I was also honored to receive the Davis Cup Award from our Student Government Association in recognition of my hard work and dedication in supporting them through their tenure, helping with programming, ordering materials for senators, and ensuring all students' voices are heard on campus.

Ten minutes with Kay
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to having a clear vision, developing a strategic plan, and remaining committed to it. One of the things I find most rewarding is seeing an organization thrive when it has the right people and talent in place.
Throughout my educational and professional journey, the roles I’ve held have consistently involved leadership and management responsibilities. My background has largely been rooted in human resources and business, which has given me extensive experience in leading teams, managing people, recruiting talent, and developing employees through training and mentorship.
Across every role, I have remained focused on a central vision and worked to execute it to the best of my ability. That focus has guided both my personal and professional growth, motivating me to pursue the certifications, skills, and experiences necessary to fully realize my goals.
I also believe that every person has a unique purpose, and it is important to identify and pursue that purpose in order to live a meaningful and impactful life.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
One of the most valuable pieces of career advice I’ve received is learning how to say no. That doesn’t mean avoiding challenges or new opportunities, pushing yourself and embracing growth are essential. Rather, it means recognizing your limits and being intentional about how much you take on. Constantly saying yes can quickly lead to burnout, so it’s important to manage your time and energy wisely. At the same time, don’t shy away from challenges. Growth and success often come from being willing to step outside your comfort zone and take on new experiences.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Give yourself grace & trust the process. If you remain organized, proactive, and goal oriented you will succeed.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Our primary focus and greatest opportunity right now is improving AI proficiency and efficiency. For us, that means ensuring we not only understand AI ourselves, but also equip our students with the knowledge and skills to use it effectively.
At the same time, we face many of the common challenges seen across higher education, particularly in securing financial support. While fundraising remains a key priority, the challenge is determining how to successfully raise funds in the current economic climate.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
I value consistency, accountability, partnership, and collaboration.
