Her Story
About Kayla
I've been in the manufacturing industry for 4 years, starting in February. I began my career at REHLKO as a quality inspector, and after about a year and a half, I was promoted to work instruction writer, a position I'm very proud of because I'm the only one the company has ever had. I create all the work instructions from scratch for operators who build generators across 5 different production lines, with 2 more coming soon for a total of 7 lines. My typical day is very busy - I go out to the floor with the engineers' help to figure out what process goes where, what steps go where, take pictures, and then come back to my desk to put together comprehensive work instructions. I also serve as an internal auditor, verifying that everything is working as it should and ensuring we do what we say and say what we do. A lot of my key aspects involve quality and verifying that everything is up to quality standards for our customers. It's a great sense of accomplishment, even though it's hectic most days. It's rewarding at the end of the day because I can look at something and know this is a generator that's going to go in somebody's house. I ensure that they're doing the best they could possibly do, because in my mind, what if an elderly person is at the house and needs this generator for their oxygen or anything, and their lights go out, and it's not built properly or built to our standards? That gives me a sense of accomplishment, knowing that I did my very best to make sure that generator is built right.

Ten minutes with Kayla
01What do you attribute your success to?
God, number one. He's always helped me through everything, and my 3 kids. I'm a single mom, and so everything I do, I do for them, trying to better our lives. Being a single mother of three boys drives me to work hard and give my best every day. My faith, guidance from my parents to always do my best, and my children are the foundation of everything I've accomplished.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Never stop pursuing your dreams and your goals, because the sky's the limit. If one door closes, another one's always going to open with even better opportunity than what you might have had before. I've learned that setbacks are just setups for something better, and you should never give up on what you want to achieve.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Don't get overwhelmed, because you can do anything that you set your mind to. And if ever you need help, ask. Don't let yourself get overwhelmed and stressed out, because if you feel that way, then you'll get overloaded and not be able to do your job properly. It's important to reach out for support when you need it so you can perform at your best.
04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Trust, for sure. I believe in always being the best person that you can be, and never deceiving anyone. Just be a great person. Honesty and integrity are at the core of everything I do, both professionally and personally.
