Her Story
About Kenyetta
My journey into the athletic apparel industry was definitely accidental. I used to work in hospital account management, and my manager at that time, her husband worked for Nike. She told me that her husband's office manager quit and they were looking for someone, and she thought I'd be great in the role. I said I didn't know anything about Nike - I knew about accounting and billing and things like that, nothing about retail. But she encouraged me to go for it. So I got an interview, they hired me, and the rest is history. That was 15 years ago. Now I serve as the Indianapolis Showroom and Supervisor, which means I'm the office manager, executive assistant, facility manager, and event planner all rolled into one. Anything that happens in Indianapolis, my hands are in the pot some type of way. I handle all aspects of our office, which serves as the account for clients like JD Finish Line and several other smaller companies. They come into our office to see, touch, and feel product before it goes into production. I handle all aspects of the meetings, the catering, the travel, everything you name it. I oversee all operational, administrative, and event planning functions, ensuring operational excellence and strategic coordination. A lot of people say I wear all these hats well. I have a very calming demeanor, so when the house is on fire, I get to hide it really, really good. People don't see it - I stay cool and collective. I've been an event planner for close to 25 years now, and this has always been my thing. I love doing this aspect of my job, and I get to meet some amazing people. I work with a lot of badass people in my industry. It's just been a really fun, happy, good time working at Nike. Beyond my day-to-day responsibilities, I'm also the founder and executive lead of North America Marketplace Showroom for Facility and Best Practices within Nike. I created this platform in 2018 so other showroom managers could have one place to talk and learn together. Everybody recognizes it within North America, and when people have questions, they actually come to me. They even fly me out if they have a new showroom manager to train them. In addition to my work at Nike, I'm also the owner of KCW Mobile Notary Services, which I founded in 2020 during COVID. I really love being in the community and being of service to other people, educating them about notary and the importance of getting things notarized. I'm there to help and serve. I'm also a cancer survivor and a survivor of an abusive marriage that lasted 20 years. All of my life, I was told I'm not good enough, I can't do it. But I'm a survivor of many things, and I want people to see the full story of what I had to overcome.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Kenyetta
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to my faith and taking a chance on myself. I think it's about taking a leap of faith. Oftentimes, as humans, we talk ourselves out of a good thing, right? So it's just finding the inner voice in you and just listening to it. Listen to your higher believer and just take a chance on yourself, and just do it. Every day we have challenges, and we talk ourselves out of things, whether we think we're not good enough, we don't have the money, or whatever the case may be. Maybe we were told we're not good enough, or this dream is too big, or whatever the case may be. But I say do it afraid and see what happens. Bet on yourself. I took a chance on myself when I started my notary business during COVID because the world was just so unsure. I'm so glad I did, because now I'm with the Better Business Bureau, I got all types of awards, and I'm on so many lists at the hospital and corporate, all the things, because I took a chance on myself.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Don't assume and just do it.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice would be, do it afraid. Every day, we have challenges, and we talk ourselves out of things, whether we think we're not good enough, we don't have the money, or whatever the case may be. Maybe we were told we're not good enough, or this dream is too big, or whatever the case may be. We have fear of taking a chance on ourselves, because maybe we were told we're not good enough, or this dream is too big. I say, do it afraid, and see what happens. Bet on yourself.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
I don't think there are any challenges right now. I'm very fortunate and blessed to be with a number one brand company. We don't have a lot of challenges, knock on wood. It's been a pretty solid road for me right now. Anything can happen, and I'm prepared. I always look ahead. That's why I started my own business, just to have another source of income. I started this during COVID, so everything was unsure during that time frame. Because the world was just so unsure, I'm so glad I did, because I took a chance on myself.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Family will always come first. Everybody that comes through my showroom, they always walk away feeling like they came home. I treat everybody the same - whether they're the VIPs, the CEOs, the housekeeping, or security. We're all one. We're all family when you come to my house, and I try to leave that impression with my hospitality. Those are the things that are most important, making sure everybody can walk away feeling good. I'm big on community-focused events as well. I do a lot of outreach programs within the office. I really love being in the community and being of service to other people, to educate them and help them. I'm there to help and serve.
