Her Story

About Khushboo

I began my healthcare journey in 2011 after earning my master's in clinical research, launching my career in cancer research. Throughout my career spanning over 10 years, I've had the privilege of working across different countries and departments, conducting various types of research. For 7 years, I worked as a cancer researcher, and I've also held positions as a research analyst and in medical billing. My experience has been incredibly rich - I've observed more than 40,000 patients, which has sharpened my clinical and medical observation skills beyond what many others in the field possess. While my husband's work in oil and gas requires us to relocate every 16 months to different states or even countries, I've used this as an opportunity to expand my expertise. The constant moves made maintaining traditional hospital positions with long hours difficult, especially with young children, so I pursued certification in lifestyle medicine from Harvard Medical School. This allows me to potentially work independently or with NGOs in the future. My expertise spans oncology, diabetes, hypertension, and cardiology. I'm passionate about lifestyle medicine because I believe many diseases can be cured through lifestyle changes. Even when I'm between positions, I stay engaged by researching on PubMed and other websites, helping people by clarifying medical myths with properly researched answers. I'm confident that my extensive hospital experience and deep clinical knowledge position me well to make a meaningful impact, whether working independently or with organizations.

01What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge I face is due to my husband's transfers - we move every 16 months to different states or even different countries because he works in oil and gas. This makes it extremely difficult to maintain a stable career in healthcare. It takes at least an hour to properly fill out one hospital job application, and after a couple of months when you finally hear back and get settled into a job, my husband gets transferred again. It's very frustrating. With young kids and the long hospital hours, it became too much to manage. That's why I pursued lifestyle medicine certification - so I could potentially do something of my own instead of depending on traditional hospital employment. However, starting my own business is also challenging because we don't know which state or country we'll be in next, and you need to follow the rules of each new location. Business requires dedication and time to get established. For now, I'm looking for opportunities where organizations can hire me, or I can work with NGOs or independent organizations, rather than committing to something of my own given our family situation.

02What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

In both my work and personal life, collaboration and partnership with my husband is extremely important to me. We have a culture where we discuss everything together - whether it's about my job, his job profile, or any decisions we need to make. It's not about the money or the amount, it's about making decisions together as a team. I also deeply value staying active and engaged - I can't just sit at home even though some people like to. I need to keep busy and continue learning and contributing. That's why even when I'm between jobs, I research on PubMed and other websites, helping people by clarifying medical questions with properly researched answers. In healthcare, I believe personal recognition and trust are paramount because you're dealing with people's lives. If your patient trusts you, then only you can heal them. People need to know who you are and feel comfortable with you. I also value dedication and doing whatever I do with excellence - I'm very good at handling any hospital profile and implementing my knowledge to help people.
