Her Story

About Kim

I've been in healthcare insurance for over 20 years now. I started my career in banking because I thought banking was my expertise, but then I realized they weren't going to need tellers anymore when ATMs started coming out. I thought, okay, insurance and health, we're always going to need folks in that field, so I pursued insurance and healthcare. I worked at Humana, which was the competitor of Anthem, and I'm currently with Anthem. I just recently got a promotion last week. In my current role, I'm a project manager doing project management. I deal with making sure the projects for our particular documents are federally compliant and get to the product and the sales team, and ultimately to the customer. I work with the brokers to make sure what they're selling is accurate and correct. I have a dual bachelor's in business and healthcare management from Northwood University, graduating in 2005. Along the way, I've gotten certified with a project management certificate, the green belt, and analytics. I'm looking to continue on to try to get my master's. My most notable professional achievement is just being respected by my coworkers and management. They always say that if they see my name on it, they know it's going to get done, and that makes me feel good.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to being respected by my coworkers and management. They always say that if they see my name on it, they know it's going to get done. That makes me feel good. My motto is that not working is not an option, so I stay relevant and keep my skills sharp. I'm willing to accept challenges and change, and I'm not afraid of change because the world is constantly changing. I don't be afraid to think that if something new comes about, I just learn how to get behind that new idea.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Just be willing to accept the challenges and change. Don't be afraid of change because the world is constantly changing. And again, don't be afraid to think that if something new comes about, just learn how to get behind that new idea. You can't stay stagnant. Basically, my motto is, not working is not an option, so stay relevant, keep your skills sharp, and you'll be fine. Try to take some classes, stay relevant. With AI and new technology, someone's got to run it. It's like with computers when they came out, everyone was worried, but it ended up being a gift. It's a gift and a curse, but on the curse side of it, just try to stay ahead of it. For me, it's healthcare, so what are we using AI for? To run databases, to run reports, so sharpen your skills in Excel, Access, to be able to know how to do those formulas in the AI world. Look at it as your friend. It's helping you work smarter and not harder, so don't be afraid. Accept the challenge.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Challenges right now would be worrying about if your job will be taken by AI. And of course, the flip side of that is just making sure, for me, it's not working, it's not an option, so just make sure I'm staying relevant in my skills. If it's AI, someone's going to have to manage the AI. So just making sure I keep my skills sharpened. With computers, there's going to be glitches, and someone's going to have to learn how to fix them. So sharpen your skills in Excel, Access, to be able to know how to do those formulas in the AI world, so you can have AI do it for you. It's work smarter, not harder, so look at it as your friend. It's helping you work smarter and not harder.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Having peace is what's most important to me. My job is so stressful, I have to think a lot, so at home, I try to keep a low mild profile because I'm getting older. I try to enjoy peace and the little simplified things. I sit back and think, you know, you see a lot of people going through things, and I'm just thankful and grateful that I can count my blessings and I don't have that going on, because it could be worse. Having peace surpasses a lot. Being respected by my coworkers and management is also important to me. They always say that if they see my name on it, they know it's going to get done, and that makes me feel good.
