Her Story

About Latasha

My post-college career has always been in learning and organizational development, or talent development. I've worked at some big companies, smaller companies, and I've built functions at startups mostly as well over the past several years. Before finding my path in this field, I explored various roles including bank teller, pharmacy technician, and accounting assistant - all part of my journey in finding myself and what I wanted to do. My first love was actually anthropology, and I thought I was going to be an archaeologist, but instead I went into organizational development. After years of working in-house and seeing the impact that consultants would have coming in from the outside, I realized I could do this on my own and have that same kind of impact. Now I go into companies and help their employees, which allows me to have variety in my work and impact at several companies as opposed to just one. Coaching has been a part of my career for the past 12 years, and I especially like to help people going through transitions when it comes to their career, or how they're navigating the workplace, or navigating group dynamics in the workplace. I specifically work with women of color - I work with people from all backgrounds, but I've enjoyed working with women of color the most. I'm also a new mother with a young baby, and because I own my own business, I have the flexibility to be the mom that I want to be, as well as the professional I want to be.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I think for someone going into this industry or profession, definitely understanding the changes that are happening right now to the workplace is critical, because that impacts the way that the humans show up, and the way that the human behaviors play out when people are working together. So paying attention to changes in the workplace is really important, in the way that people work together. The other thing is that what we do, working in this space of talent management, learning and development, whatever you want to call it, is applicable to any industry. You're not stuck in an industry. Know that when you are working in this space, what you're addressing are group dynamics, human dynamics, and there are people in every industry everywhere. I have worked in 4 or 5 different industries, always doing this work. And for someone starting their own thing, just make sure you're getting into it for the right reasons.

02What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge right now is the evolution of the way that we work. Obviously everyone's talking about AI, but I think that the impact that it's having on how people work together is significant. The evolution around AI - it doesn't, it shouldn't eliminate jobs, it should evolve jobs. So I think that there's that piece of it right now around how AI is playing a role in the workplace and changing the way people work together. And people in my profession needing to be able to respond to that and to evolve around that.
