Her Story

About Leah

I graduated with a mechanical engineering degree and started my career in packaging working on Windex, where I installed equipment and worked on streamlining and line efficiencies. Throughout my 30-plus year career, I've been in the packaging world, progressing from engineering roles up to the director level at a small organization. I've done extensive international travel, managed people and projects all over the world, and worked on some really exciting initiatives. One of my most notable achievements was working on a Greenfield startup of a facility in South Carolina - I came on when the walls were still under construction and stayed through completion. We finished ahead of schedule and under budget, which was incredibly rewarding. I also set up contract manufacturing in China, making multiple trips to work with manufacturers there to supply product throughout the world. That was a culturally enlightening experience that really helped me learn and grow. I went from my previous company to Sunoco, which was then bought by Topan, where I've been for 10 years now. I started at Topan in manufacturing, particularly with quality and complaints, then got promoted to the commercial side of the business. Currently, I work in packaging design and development, mostly with the format of the structure, and my team focuses on the Mondelez account, which includes brands like Oreo, Ritz, Chips Ahoy, and Sour Patch Kids. One of the biggest projects we've done recently was launching a brand new seasonal Halloween item with glow-in-the-dark inks, which I helped manage and coordinate from start to finish.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

You've got to have really good, thick skin. Early in my career, it was difficult being a female - I had lots of unprofessional things said to me that were totally embarrassing, and the treatment of being a female and managing men was not a fun exercise. However, I would say the culture has changed a lot, and I hope you would not interact with the kind of people I interacted with. There are a lot of really good, positive companies out there that help to embrace just the person and not the sex. I think project management is very, very rewarding when you get to see something from the start to the finish. You do have to have lots of good organization skills, and you do have to have patience. The biggest challenge working in a male-dominated field has been being seen as a person and not as a female. I've been told I was too pretty to be as smart as I was, and I've had lots of sexual innuendos throughout the years. It's hard, it's been an interesting road for sure. But I do believe that you have to know your own person and be able to stand firm on your character and your integrity.

02What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

I am a very spiritual person, and I feel like my spiritual grounding has really helped me to be more of a servant leader. I love to practice servant leadership both professionally and privately in my career. I also believe strongly in character and integrity - you have to know your own person and be able to stand firm on your character and your integrity.
