Her Story

About Leila

I have been working in biotechnology since 2013, and my current position is as a postdoctoral researcher in the Pathology Department at the University of California, San Diego. My main focus now is Alzheimer's disease research, where I am working on a large NIH-funded project to understand the mechanisms of this disease and develop medications for use in different stages, from early stage to others. Throughout my career, I have worked on various biotechnology projects, including postbiotics and supplements, which represents a new aspect in the probiotic field. I also have extensive experience with microbiota research. One of my significant achievements was working on celiac disease, where I discovered an enzyme from a bacterial species that I recorded in the NCBI database under my name. We developed a product that celiac patients can use to help manage their condition. In my home country of Iran, I am a co-founder of a factory based on biotechnology products. Since moving to the United States in 2024, I have been working under the mentorship of Steven Elgano, Chief of the Department of Pathology at UCSD, from whom I have learned a great deal. I am currently waiting for my green card and plan to eventually transfer my biotechnology work into a startup here in the United States, with the goal of establishing a factory to produce our products domestically.

Ten minutes with Leila

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I believe that every person can have an effect on life and make a difference. We all have to try to have this effect. If everyone has a little good effect in this world, the world will become a better place for life. All of us are responsible for making this world better. This is what drives me in my work and what I would want others to understand - that we each have the power and responsibility to contribute something positive.

02What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

For me, humanitarianism is the most important value in my career and also in my personal life. I have respect for every person, and I like to help as much as I can to others. This is what I'm always thinking about. I think about a person who has, for example, a disease like Alzheimer's, and I feel this responsibility on myself that I have to help them. This sense of responsibility to help others drives everything I do.
