Her Interview
Ten minutes with Lizette
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to empathy — a deep commitment to seeing each patient and colleague as a whole person. That empathy drives me to provide attentive, high-quality care and to mentor others with patience and belief in their potential. By creating a supportive environment and showing people I truly believe in them, I’ve helped many unlock their own excellence and grow into stronger caregivers and leaders.
“Empathy, belief, and mentorship: the cornerstones of my success.”
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
“Lead by listening.”
The best career advice I received was to listen first — to patients, colleagues, and mentors — before acting. Listening builds trust, reveals real needs, and guides smarter decisions. When you lead with curiosity and humility, you make better choices, create stronger teams, and open opportunities for others to grow.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
- Find mentors and sponsors — seek people who will both teach you skills and advocate for your advancement.
- Learn to speak up confidently for patients and for yourself; clear communication earns trust and visibility.
- Invest in continuous learning — clinical skills, leadership, and emotional intelligence matter equally.
- Prioritize self-care and boundaries so compassion for others doesn’t burn you out.
- Volunteer for stretch assignments — visible responsibility accelerates growth.
- Build a supportive network of peers; share lessons and lift each other up.
- Embrace mistakes as learning opportunities and ask for feedback regularly.
Believe in your voice, keep learning, and protect your energy.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges in my field is that the need has never been greater, yet the systems meant to support people are often stretched thin. Social workers are navigating burnout, complex client needs, and structural inequities every day.
But within that challenge is a powerful opportunity. Women in this field, especially those of us on the front lines, have a unique ability to lead change. We understand not just the problems, but the human impact behind them.
This is a moment for us to step into leadership, advocate for systemic change, and redefine what equitable, compassionate care truly looks like.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Integrity is at the core of who I am in my work. It's about being honest, standing by my values, and advocating for others with transparency and respect. In a field where trust is everything, integrity allows me to build meaningful connections and remain grounded, even in complex and challenging situations.
