Her Story
About Lucy
I am the lead designer at our company, and I create all of the visuals for our clients. I'm also in charge of marketing for our company, handling both the strategy and all of those visuals as well. Since our company is so lean, I am also in leadership, so I do a lot of strategizing for our company, our next moves, our milestones, and just overall health. What I love most about my career, aside from my boss and the people I work with, is the ability to create. I think it is so cool to have just the room in my company to be as creative as I am, because I think that a lot of people are so creative, they just don't have the room to create and explore their imagination. So I'm very grateful for the job that I have and the role that I have, and just the fact that my boss loves it so much and encourages it. When I was in the Chamber of Commerce locally, I had the opportunity to do the educational segment that happened every meeting, preparing mini speeches and educational pieces. At the end of my term, which was a year, I received an award that the chamber created just to give to me for having good educational pieces, which meant a lot to me because I put a lot of time into those and it was a source of pride for me.

01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute so much of my success to my mom, and also to my boss, who is the founder of our company. My mom just has always had such an incredible work ethic, so those two women really have just brought me up to know the value of just a hard day's work and earning your spot. There's gonna be trials and tribulations, and they really inspire me because all things considered, they've had some difficult, difficult times, and just not a very easy hand that was dealt. But somehow, they not just made it work, but they just impressed everyone. Like, it's like they beat all the odds, and they just keep doing it, and I'm very lucky to be so close to both of them.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
I think the best career advice I've ever received is really just that the sky's the limit. Basically, if you aim high, like, even if you fall short of aiming high, you're still gonna get pretty high up there, you know? Even if you don't achieve what you set out to achieve, if you make very lofty goals, and you dream really big, and you fall short, you're still gonna end up getting much farther than you would have if you just aimed somewhere realistic and hit the target. And that's served me well.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Honestly, I would say just the same thing, but with extra oomph, and more love than my heart, because I know, obviously, there's a glass ceiling. But really, like, if you just aim high, and you know in your mind that you are capable of something, whatever obstacle is in your way, like, it's not gonna stop you. It won't be the end-all. If you tell yourself that you know what you're doing and you have a goal, then even though it's so cliche, but really, there is no limit. You can do anything. If you can see it, you can do it.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
I would say one of the challenges in marketing is just navigating this industry and day-to-day, being in the tech revolution, and like, how quickly things change. That is a big challenge, because what you may be confident saying to a client is valuable one day, and you put together that whole plan, like, within days, that could change. We have meetings very often where we come prepared to the meeting, everyone prepped something that morning with info or a strategy that they want to do, and then within a half hour of talking, we realize it's obsolete, or the client says something, and everything changes. Just the speed at which tech changes, I think, is maybe one of the biggest hurdles.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Definitely sharing your knowledge with other people. Being willing also to be wrong, and just always be humble. You have something to gain from any conversation with anyone. And knowledge really is the greatest resource that we have. So, just going into any conversation with someone, whether it's professional or another person, you want to try to, like, by the end of the conversation, be like, okay, what is it like, or how would I live a day in this person's life? And just going into it with that, you'll get so much information about just this person and how they live their lives, and you never know what may come from that. So, just, being curious, and then also sharing your knowledge with other people.
