Her Story
About Luisa
My love for exercise, workouts, and helping people started with my grandmother, who always had a sense of service to people and the community. I carried that to college in Chihuahua, Mexico, where I graduated in 2004 with a degree in physical education and sports science. During college, I started practicing in a rehab clinic where my job was following the doctor and helping with little things, but I learned all about helping and serving people there. After graduating, I started teaching fitness classes and eventually became a personal trainer, specializing in seniors. Over my 9 years in this field, I've earned certifications in personal training, nutrition for seniors, functional aging specialist, and group exercise classes. I've been teaching Silver Sneaker classes for all 9 years. Currently, I'm in my second year at the Jones Center, a community center in Arkansas, where I oversee programs for seniors, teach Silver Sneaker classes, and manage the Cloud 55 program that focuses on helping seniors learn, have fun, and create community and relationships. I also help with summer camps for kids and oversee La Posada, a Mexican tradition cultural event we celebrate in December that has had a huge impact on my community.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I would say that helping people to achieve health goals is the most beautiful thing. I think being close to people where they are feeling weak, or they are feeling that they are not enough, I think this field has the big opportunity to be support for those people that are trying to feel that they are not alone in this journey. I think once that people come to you feeling that they are not enough because the health is going down, and then you help them with workouts and nutrition tips and all this information, it's so amazing to see how you can be with them in this journey. It's very rewarding. For example, a year ago, one of my clients I had been training for 4 years started with me because the doctor told her she was starting with osteoporosis. Last year, she came with a big smile to the session, saying that a day before, she had the appointment with the doctor to review her health and the bones, and then they told her she's osteoporosis-free, because the workouts and medicine and diet and all that. Those are little things that make the day, and they are the change of somebody's people's life.
