Her Story

About Lupita

I started with Walmart as a cashier almost 13 years ago, and from there I've been in about 10 different roles across Walmart US, Sam's Club, and now Walmart International. I've run the credit card program for Sam's Club, done operations, e-commerce, and worked as a product manager. For Walmart US, I was a senior manager in tech ops where I could apply a lot of my background. Now I've upskilled myself to learn more about AI and how I can help others upskill themselves. Just 6 months ago, I got promoted to a director role. A typical day for me is to tap into the markets, which means different countries where Walmart has presence, and help the associates there navigate with change management and how they adapt new technology to their specific market. My biggest achievement is the people that I have been able to connect with over these last 13 years, not just as associates but they become friends, my network and support system in some cases. I also led the PMRP program, the Product Management Rotational Program, where we develop the future leaders of product managers. For me, it's very important to make sure that as I get opportunities, I'm helping others as well to upskill themselves.

Ten minutes with Lupita

01What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Never stop learning and be adaptable as possible. I think education is key for anyone, not just going to school, but keep learning and putting yourself up there.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Take risks, but also believe in yourself. I think before anyone else can believe in you, you have to believe in yourself.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One challenge is how, as a female, you make sure that you make your point, and when you're at a table or in a meeting, you have a responsibility to make sure you have the voice for those who are not there. There are so many challenges that we've been facing, not just in retail but in general as females, so it's all about how we support each other.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

My non-negotiables are my family first and personal integrity. I really believe that every day after work, I need to feel comfortable with what I do to go and talk to my kids, and I apply those values as well at work. I want to make sure that I value every individual, but at the same time, I get myself accountable for the decisions that I'm making.
