Her Story

About Magdalena

I have been practicing as a marriage and family therapist for 24 years, serving the San Diego community with a focus on the Latino population. My typical day involves seeing clients from 6 to 8 sessions, either in person or via Zoom, and I dedicate three days a week to facilitating process therapy groups. After earning my bachelor's degree in business in Mexico, I pursued my master's degree at San Diego University for Integrative Studies, graduating in 2003. I then completed a 6-year internship at a local domestic violence shelter, which provided invaluable experience before I started my private practice. What I consider my most notable professional achievement is being able to serve the Latino community in San Diego, helping them with their acculturation, adjustment, and mental health issues. Currently, I receive most of my referrals by word of mouth, which I really appreciate as it's very enriching, though primarily from Hispanic clients. I'm now looking to be challenged by serving other populations as well and expanding the diversity of my practice.

01What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

My priorities are my family, my children, and my grandchildren. Even though they don't live here, if there's an opportunity, I will travel to spend quality time with them. I really appreciate the value of friendship and make time to gather with friends. In my work, I find it very enriching to receive referrals by word of mouth from my clients, and I value the recognition that comes from clients who call years after, leave me a note, or send me a letter. That feedback is what I use as recognition for the work I do.
