Her Story
About Mary
I've been in the staffing industry for nearly 9 years, and I just recently took on a branch manager role this month. My journey into staffing is actually a funny story - people say you don't really go to school for staffing, it just kind of finds you. I was working at a gas station when a VP walked in dressed to the nines in a pink skirt suit, looking beautiful. I asked what she did for a living, and she told me she was in staffing. I had no idea what that was at the time, but she said she liked my personality and how I treated people, and that she was hiring. I thought it only happened in movies, but she came back a week or two later and told me she was still hiring. I thought to myself, what do I have to lose? So I went to the interview, and it just took off from there. In my current role as a selling branch manager, I focus on reconnecting with clients, getting business, and helping match qualified candidates to the open roles we have. But what's really important to me is making genuine connections and building relationships. I want people to know they can trust us - that we're not just sending bodies to fill roles. I want to build that rapport with clients so they know they can call me at 10 o'clock at night and I can help them, even if I can't fill the whole order, at least get half of what they need. My day-to-day involves everything from the ground up - sales, filling roles, managing operations, recruiting, interviewing, checking emails, managing resumes and applicants. We're still kind of starting up here, so when people walk in, I focus on building those relationships, making them feel comfortable, and letting them know we're truly here to help them.

Ten minutes with Mary
01What do you attribute your success to?
I would say just having a good foundation growing up, having my mother and father present in my life, teaching us the basics of morals and values. My family taught me that your family is your whole reputation, and they instilled in me the importance of having respect for your elders, for other people, and just being a good person. That foundation has been everything to me.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I ever received is just to remember where you started. On those hard days when you think about giving up, remember where you came from and look how far you've come. We have hard days in recruiting, so it's not easy, but keeping that perspective really helps me push through.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Love yourself, and know your worth, and know that you're capable of achieving anything, and don't let anybody stop you.
04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
For me, what's most important is integrity, definitely culture, and environment. Respect for others is crucial, but integrity is definitely a huge one for me.
