Her Story
About Maxine
My current role focuses on leadership and education, particularly working with school districts on family engagement. I've been doing consulting work for about 10 years. My work is really about helping districts understand the population that they serve. I think a lot of times people want cookie-cutter things, and I like innovation. Sometimes we have to think outside the box. God has really blessed me to get those contracts because I bring something new. It's not a system that you buy - it's about building connections and building bridges instead of walls in your communities. Engagement is not this rigid thing, it's building connections. A lot of people come in with all these systems, but what may work in California may not work in Virginia. So it's really about tailoring my services to meet the need of the population that people are serving. My day-to-day involves scheduling meetings, putting presentations together, doing work in my community, and advocating for education and for those communities who have been unserviced. I'm really big on grassroot work, so you'll find me at a lot of community events. My work is research, meetings with districts, and building my brand.

Ten minutes with Maxine
01What do you attribute your success to?
God, discipline, hardwork and family
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Your purpose should never cause you to abandon your peace!
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
You have what you need. You deserve to be in the room. You need to be in the room. That's what I would tell my younger self. I struggled with believing in myself for a while, and I was like, wait, I've done the work, I deserve to be here just as much as anybody else.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The opportunities in my current role are really about helping districts understand the population that they serve. I think a lot of times people want cookie-cutter things, and I like innovation. Sometimes we have to think outside the box. God has really blessed me to get those contracts because I bring something new. It's not a system that you buy, it's about building connections and building bridges instead of walls in your communities. The barrier is, because I am a new company, making sure that I can deliver and get those contracts. Even though my name is well known in education or family engagement, the barrier is really me. It's not necessarily external, it's just being successful. I'm definitely secure in my work, but the barrier is just making sure that I don't present anything that's cookie cutter.
