Her Story

About Mia

My journey in accounting started when I was young, going with my mom to file her taxes. I was always in awe at the tax return and thought maybe I could see myself in that field. I realized I was really in tune with math and numbers and a problem solver, so in middle school and high school I started searching for a career I'd be passionate about that also aligns with what I am proficient at. I thought accounting was a great industry to go into, and as I learned throughout the years in high school and going into college, I realized accounting is a field that is in high demand. I have an interest in tax accounting, but also the broader industry of accounting, including audit. I'm currently a college student at Georgia State University, just finishing my sophomore year and going into my third year of studying accounting. I just began my first professional internship at Valvit Capital, a firm that specializes in private credit and residential investments. I finished my second week this past week, and my day-to-days have been about getting myself acquainted with the team and the firm itself, going through projects, working with my mentors, and learning as much as I can. The firm made a great first impression on me with their open-door policy and how flexible they are with me, knowing that since I come from an accounting background, this is not an accounting firm per se, so they're working with me at my own pace as I'm trying to learn and absorb and understand.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I feel like the best thing that's helped me stay grounded and rooted has been me just taking breaks and rejuvenating on the weekend, doing a hobby that I like, which is bike riding, just being out in nature. I'm also involved in my Bible study on campus, which helps keep me well-rounded and reminds me of what I'm working for, the reason behind that. It reminds me to take it day by day and plan my day out. I like to write things down, so that helps me feel productive and stay on track. It's not been a smooth journey because a few semesters I've taken 6 classes at once and juggling all of my other extracurriculars and activities and balancing just everything outside of school and work.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I think the best piece of advice is that if anybody who's entering the college phases for accounting is to just get involved and ask as many people who are a junior to you, or a sophomore, somebody who is a student, for resources, just for where to start, because it can be very daunting and overwhelming. But there are a lot of people who have poured into me and given me resources, and I would definitely tell people, tell others about your interests and your passions, because people will look out for you and will remember you, and they may encounter somebody who can give you access to the accounting field, whether that's like office tours, or one-on-one chats, or even when applying to internships. So just trying to build a bridge of mentorship, trying to find a mentor as you are entering the industry was the best start, and it's helped me.
