Her Story

About Monica

I've been in the aerospace industry for almost 40 years, and my main area is aerospace engineering, working on the technical side. I started at Rockwell International, then worked at McDonnell Douglas and Boeing. My longest tenure was 18 years at JPL, which was really significant for me. In 2018, I started working with the Air Force through Aerospace Corporation, and then I transitioned to a government contractor around 2019. I currently support a commander who oversees the largest Delta, a 3-letter delta SYD88 with three divisions. I worked with him in a previous position, and he took me with him when he moved to this role. My typical day is very busy and involves scheduling meetings, managing his calendar, de-conflicting overlapping meetings, delegating meetings to his deputy, checking for read-ahead materials and making sure he has them at least 2 days before, coordinating speaking engagements, managing office phones and conference room calendars, and preparing his travel itineraries and agendas. He's a heavy traveler, so I do all his travel arrangements and expense reports to make sure there are no glitches. I also coordinate prep meetings when the divisions need to meet with him before they present to his boss. I work in a secure area, and sometimes I have to open it or close it, coming in early or staying late. What I really like about what I do is that I'm customer-driven. For me, my customer is the commander I support and everyone else in my department and orbit that I work with. I care about how I present and I want them to be taken care of. I don't want anyone to feel like they can't come to me and ask for something. To me, this role is kind of a servitude-type position, it's customer service, and you have to be open to interacting all the time and being on all the time. That's just how I feel about this role.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Always be open to learning. Stay on top of learning the new tools that come out, whatever they are, learning new processes that will help you improve how you perform your job. When I think back to when I came in to this and where we are now, it's just really changed a lot. And so you have to be willing to stay on top of learning. You have to be open to learning. It's a never-ending process. You have to just be open to learning new things and staying on top of it, because if you don't, it won't go well. I know some who are not always willing to learn new things, and it doesn't play out well. I work with younger people, and I like the fact that they tell me I don't act my age. There are some admins who have been in these roles and they're not open to learning, and it just doesn't go well. You have to be open to learning and staying on top of that area. I think that's the one piece of advice I would give.

02What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

I know people talk about AI, and I do see it starting to kind of come into play. Right now, I don't find it to be a challenge for me personally. I think work-life balance might be a little bit of a challenge at times. Sometimes I come in early and I leave late. I am fortunate that when I am not here, I'm not here. I don't log in because I'm in a secured area. I might log in on Sunday to kind of see what's coming at me, but my time on the weekend is my time, and I do like that about it. But during the week, work-life balance can be a little tricky. Coming in early, staying late, not getting up from my desk, maybe not taking a break or taking a walk or getting some air, that can be a little bit of a challenge.
