What Is Your Definition of Leadership?

Before you became a leader, how did you envision yourself getting there?

Did you picture yourself holding a certain title, making important decisions, guiding a team, or finally having the authority to create change?

We enter leadership for many reasons. Some of us want to make a difference. Some want to become the leader we once needed. Others recognize an opportunity to use their gifts, influence an organization, or create a better experience for those who come behind them.

Yet somewhere along the way, leadership can become closely associated with position, authority, and control. It becomes measured by how many people report to us, how much influence we hold, or how effectively we direct the work of others. Even when our intentions are good, we can become so focused on leading, developing, protecting, and supporting everyone around us that we overlook the first person we were entrusted to lead.

Ourselves.

The First Person I Was Entrusted to Lead Was Me

When I truly understood that, self-leadership became more than managing my time, controlling my emotions, or making responsible decisions. It required me to know, own, and accept myself.

I had to look in the mirror and accept the woman looking back at me. I had to accept the journey she had traveled, the pain she had endured, the triumphs she had earned, the mistakes she had made, and the lessons she was still learning. I had to recognize her gifts and abilities, become acquainted with her voice, and embrace the direction she desired for her life.

That was my first stewardship.

Leadership Is Not Ownership. Leadership Is Stewardship.

Ownership asks, "What can I control?"

Stewardship asks, "What have I been entrusted to cultivate?"

When leadership is treated as ownership, people can become resources to manage, voices to silence, or instruments used to fulfill a leader's vision.

But people do not belong to the leaders entrusted to guide them.

Their gifts, ideas, experiences, and potential are not ours to possess. They are ours to recognize, cultivate, and protect.

However, I cannot responsibly steward what is within someone else if I am unwilling to steward what is within myself.

Self-Stewardship Begins with Knowing Who I Am

It means accepting my voice, values, gifts, limitations, needs, and capacity. It means taking responsibility for my emotional well-being, health, time, energy, boundaries, development, and decisions.

It means caring for the person carrying the vision, not only pursuing the vision itself.

This acceptance allows me to walk into a room knowing that I belong there. It enables me to sit at any table without abandoning myself to gain the approval of those seated around it.

Before I could confidently lead within different rooms and environments, I first had to learn how to lead myself into them.

That does not mean I enter every room believing I have all the answers.

Stewardship of self does not require perfection.

I will not always articulate every thought perfectly. I may stumble over my words, fumble in a moment, or enter a conversation without knowing exactly what to say.

But my confidence is not based on flawless performance.

It is grounded in knowing who I am.

I can be confident and still be teachable.

I can recognize the value I bring while remaining humble enough to learn from others.

I can accept who I am today while continuing to develop the woman I am becoming.

Self-acceptance does not mean believing there is nothing left to improve.

It means I no longer reject myself while I am growing.

That is the foundation of empowered leadership.

Empowered Leaders Hold Up Mirrors

An empowered leader does not lead by forcing others to become replicas of herself.

She understands that every person possesses a distinct combination of experiences, talents, abilities, and perspectives. Because she has learned to accept herself, she is not threatened by what is different in someone else.

Instead, she holds up a mirror.

She helps people recognize strengths they may have overlooked.

She asks the questions that encourage them to discover what is already within them.

She creates opportunities that challenge them to use their gifts.

She does not define their potential according to her own path.

She helps them discover the unique way they are equipped to lead.

That is how I define leadership.

I do not believe my responsibility is to make people lead exactly as I do.

My responsibility is to help them recognize who they are, accept what they see, and develop the confidence to lead in a way that is authentic to their gifts, talents, and abilities.

But I can only hold that mirror steadily for someone else because I first had the courage to stand before my own.

Sustainable Leadership Begins Within

Taking care of myself is not separate from my leadership.

It is what makes my leadership sustainable.

Leading myself well gives me the emotional capacity to listen, the confidence to welcome other perspectives, the discernment to recognize potential, and the security to help someone else grow without feeling diminished by their advancement.

When I neglect myself, I may still hold a title. I may still make decisions, meet expectations, and produce results.

But eventually, depletion changes how I lead.

Exhaustion affects my patience.

Unhealed pain affects my responses.

Insecurity affects how I receive the brilliance of others.

Self-neglect is not the price of leadership, and abandoning myself is not evidence of service.

The first stewardship requires me to care for my whole self so that I can lead from wholeness rather than depletion. It requires me to keep becoming—not because I am inadequate, but because growth is part of honoring what has been entrusted to me.

Before I lead a team, protect a mission, build an organization, or develop another person, I must first accept responsibility for the life, voice, gifts, and purpose placed in my care.

The first person I was entrusted to lead was me.

And when I lead her well, I am better prepared to hold up the mirror that helps someone else recognize the leader within themselves.

Leadership is not ownership.

Leadership is stewardship.

And leadership begins with me.

The Chapter That Awakened Me: How Cancer Revealed the Life I Was Meant to Live

There comes a point in life when you begin asking questions you never thought to ask before.

Not because you've failed.

Not because you've lost your way.

But because something happens that forces you to stop living on autopilot and examine whether the life you've built is truly your own.

For me, that moment came in 2022, when I was diagnosed with colon cancer.

Until then, I believed I was doing everything I was supposed to do. I worked hard, built a successful career, showed up for my family, honored my commitments, and followed the path that so many of us are taught to pursue.

Like many women, I looked around the room and measured my life against what appeared to be normal, successful, and acceptable. If something seemed to work for everyone else, I assumed it was the right direction for me as well.

The truth is, I had become very good at meeting expectations.

I just hadn't stopped long enough to ask whether those expectations were actually mine.

There is something almost instinctive about the way we compare ourselves to others. We observe how women around us live, what they celebrate, the careers they pursue, the relationships they build, and the lives they seem to enjoy.

Without even realizing it, we begin collecting clues about who we should become. Little by little, we shape ourselves around what appears to be accepted, admired, and approved.

No one tells us to lose ourselves.

It happens quietly.

We become so focused on fitting into the world around us that we rarely stop to consider whether we are fully living as the women we were created to be.

Cancer Changed That

A diagnosis has a way of stripping away everything that once felt urgent and replacing it with a single, unavoidable question:

If my time were shorter than I expected, would I be proud of the life I chose to live?

It was a question I could no longer avoid.

As I walked through treatment and recovery, I realized something that surprised me. While cancer was attacking my body, it was also exposing the places where I had quietly surrendered parts of myself over the years.

I had become so accustomed to meeting expectations that I had neglected to discover what truly brought me joy, fulfillment, and purpose.

Recovery became about far more than healing physically.

It became an invitation to rediscover myself.

I began making different decisions, not because I wanted to reinvent who I was, but because I wanted my life to finally reflect the woman I had always been beneath the expectations.

I stopped asking what would make other people comfortable and started asking what aligned with the purpose I believe God placed within me.

That shift changed everything.

I found the courage to write books that had lived inside me for years. I embraced music as another expression of my voice. I expanded my business beyond what once felt safe.

Most importantly, I stopped apologizing for taking up the space I was created to occupy.

Cancer Did Not Create a New Version of Me

It revealed one.

The woman I am today didn't suddenly appear after my diagnosis. She had been there all along, patiently waiting beneath years of responsibility, comparison, fear, and the quiet desire to fit in.

That realization has changed the way I look at every difficult season.

We often believe our hardest experiences interrupt our lives.

Now I wonder if they introduce us to ourselves.

Perhaps the divorce doesn't define us.

Perhaps the career setback isn't the end of our story.

Perhaps the unexpected loss, the disappointment, the illness, or the season that brought us to our knees is actually revealing the strength, wisdom, and courage that had been quietly growing beneath the surface all along.

I no longer believe that purpose is something we eventually find.

I believe purpose is uncovered when we stop living according to everyone else's definition of success and begin living in alignment with who we were uniquely created to be.

That doesn't happen overnight.

• It happens one honest decision at a time.
• It happens one boundary at a time.
• It happens one act of courage at a time.
• It happens one moment of choosing authenticity over approval.

If you're reading this while standing in the middle of your own difficult season, wondering whether life will ever feel like yours again, I hope you'll remember this:

You are not starting over.

You are uncovering.

The woman you're searching for isn't waiting somewhere in your future. She has been growing through every challenge you've survived, every lesson you've learned, every tear you've cried, and every time you've chosen to keep moving forward when it would have been easier to give up.

The Chapter That Awakened It

Looking back now, I no longer see cancer as the chapter that defined my life.

I see it as the chapter that awakened it.

It taught me that life is far too precious to be lived according to someone else's expectations. It reminded me that purpose is worth pursuing, even when it requires courage.

And it helped me understand that becoming isn't about creating a different version of ourselves.

It's about finally giving ourselves permission to become who we were all along.

Today, when I look in the mirror, I don't see a woman who survived cancer.

I see a woman who finally found herself.

And perhaps that is the greatest gift life's hardest seasons can offer.

Not a new identity.

But the courage to embrace the one that was waiting for us all along.

Cancer did not teach me how to die.

It taught me how to live with intention.
