Her Story

About Onyi

I work as a Senior Clinical Research Associate and Lead, and my key responsibilities revolve around protecting patient safety, ensuring data quality, and making sure the study follows the protocols and regulations. I work on oncology studies like FLEX, where I make sure that patient rights are protected. I conduct site visits including SIVs and IMVs, and verify that the site is following the study protocol and GCP guidelines. I do data verification, reviewing source documents versus case report forms, and I confirm participants are properly consented before study procedures. I review adverse events and safety reporting, ensure essential regulatory documents are maintained, and confirm that the site is compliant with FDA, ICH, GCP, and sponsor requirements. I also train and guide site staff on protocol, procedures, data entry, and study requirements. My favorite part of my career is working with purpose and knowing that the work I do contributes to improving patient care and advancing medicine. Even though much of the work involves oversight and ensuring studies are conducted properly, it's meaningful to know that it ultimately helps bring new treatments and therapies to people who need them. I enjoy the collaboration aspect of my work, getting to work with physicians, the PIs, study teams, and different professionals who all share the same goal of improving healthcare. Being part of that process and seeing how everyone's expertise comes together to move things forward is really rewarding to me.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I would say resilience, faith, and a strong work ethic. As an immigrant, a mother of three, and someone who is in a fast-paced healthcare environment, I've learned to stay focused and adaptable. I also believe in continuous learning and being open to growth. Every role I've taken on has been an opportunity to develop new skills and contribute in meaningful ways. But most importantly, remembering that there are real people behind the work keeps me motivated to do my best.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I've received is to always remember the purpose behind the work. It's kind of easy to focus on deadlines, reports, and processes, but at the end of the day, the work we do helps move medicine forward, and it gives patients access to potential new treatments. Keeping that perspective has helped me stay grounded and passionate about my career.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would encourage young women or women in my industry to believe in their ability to grow into leadership, even if they are just starting out. The healthcare and research industry offers many opportunities to make a real impact. I would also recommend being curious and willing to learn from others. Ask too many questions, because no question is wrong, no question is right. Seek mentors, don't be afraid to contribute your ideas, because your perspective is valuable, and the field benefits from diverse voices and experiences.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

I would say one of the biggest opportunities right now is the rapid advancement of medical innovation, especially in the areas like oncology and personalized medicine. New therapies and technologies are changing the way diseases are treated. At the same time, there are challenges, such as improving patient participation and diversity in studies, and ensuring strong collaboration between physicians, the research team, and the sponsor. Addressing these areas can help ensure that new treatments reach the people who need them the most.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

I would say integrity, perseverance, and compassion. Integrity is very important to me, because I believe in doing things the right way, even when no one is watching. In the work I do, accuracy, honesty, and accountability are essential, and I carry that same mindset into my personal life as well. Compassion is another value I hold closely. Whether it's in my career, my family life, or my interactions with others, I believe in treating people with empathy and understanding. Everyone is going through something, and a little kindness can make a whole lot of difference, no matter how small it is. Perseverance also has shaped much of my journey. As an immigrant and a professional balancing many responsibilities, I've learned the importance of staying committed to my goals, even when things are challenging. Those experiences have strengthened me and continue to guide how I approach both my work and life.
