Her Story
About Raven
I have been in the beauty industry for at least 17 years, if not longer. I started freelancing before 2008, and then began working at MAC Cosmetics in 2008. Since then, I've worked with amazing brands including Sephora, Clarins, and I currently work for Joe Malone. My mother actually inspired me to go into aesthetics. She was the one saying, 'Oh, you are great at makeup, you are an artist, why don't you become a makeup artist?' From there, I've always thought and felt that the basis of a makeup look should be good skin. That's essentially why I got into aesthetics. I wanted people to feel good all around. You know, makeup covers color, not texture. I always felt like I still want you to be confident, regardless, as to whether or not you're able to wear makeup or apply it in the way that I'm able to apply it. Within the next five years, I am going back to school in the fall to obtain my nursing degree so that I can have medical aesthetics as part of my career journey. Being that I am an artist, the idea is that I would be able to provide medical aesthetics as far as camouflage tattooing for those who have been affected by any particular life-altering happenstance, whether that be breast cancer, where I can help reconstruct that, or burns, or any other defect. I do enjoy and would like to administer Botox and fillers, but my primary focus would be everything as a whole, not just that.

01What do you attribute your success to?
I'm a faith-based woman, so I'm gonna say God. I understand that we take that out of stock, and that's all, but for me, it's that. Definitely my mother. I always say she's the realest one on my team. She's 71, she just made that, and she can do pull-ups. She did 200 pull-ups the other day. Yeah, she's a phenomenal woman. So, she has wrecked my nerves, but yes. Definitely my sister as well. I would attribute, you know, my success to her. And then the women who kind of helped pave the way, those who took a chance on me. I remember prior to working at Mac, I applied like 12 times. It was hard to get in, but I'm grateful that I learned so much, and it was one particular woman, she was an amazing manager, and she set the tone for the type of manager that I would become and that I wanted to be.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Be patient with your clients. Book or textbook knowledge is a little different than on hand, so be patient with your clients. You'll get a myriad of different clients from all different backgrounds. So also, be open to learning, you know, whether it's different skin tones, different skin types. That goes back into, again, being patient. You're the expert, even if you're the new expert, but it is a matter of them trusting the process and you trusting the process as well.
