Q

What do you attribute your success to?

My success is rooted in resilience, purpose, and an unshakeable belief in my potential. Growing up in an underprivileged community and being raised by a single mother taught me early on the value of strength, perseverance, and self-determination. Those experiences became the foundation that drove me to pursue a different future.

As a Latina woman working in the male-dominated field of forensic science, I’ve had to break barriers, challenge expectations, and constantly push beyond limits placed in front of me. That reality never discouraged me—if anything, it fueled my hunger to rise, to excel, and to redefine what is possible for women who look like me.

My motivation has always been bigger than myself. I strive not only to reach my highest potential, but also to inspire others to do the same. My commitment to creating change, uplifting my community, and opening doors for future generations is what continues to guide my work and my purpose.

In every step of my journey, I’ve turned challenges into momentum. That, more than anything, is what has shaped the woman I am today.

Q

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I’ve ever received is to embrace challenges as opportunities and to never underestimate the power of persistence. Early in my career, I was reminded that doors might not always open easily, especially in male-dominated fields—but every obstacle is a chance to learn, grow, and prove what you’re capable of.

This advice has shaped how I approach my work and life: I tackle difficult problems with determination, seek ways to turn setbacks into lessons, and always push myself to reach my fullest potential. It’s a mindset that not only drives personal success but also inspires others to pursue their goals, no matter the barriers.

Q

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young Latina women entering STEM and forensic science is to embrace your unique perspective and never let anyone define your limits. You belong in this field, and your voice, ideas, and determination are invaluable.

Work hard, stay curious, and seek out mentors who support and challenge you. Don’t be afraid to break barriers or step into spaces where you might be the first or the only—you are paving the way for others. Most importantly, believe in your potential, lift others as you climb, and let your passion drive you. The challenges you face will only strengthen your resilience and make your successes even more impactful.

Q

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges in forensic science today is the backlog of cases and limited resources in many labs, which can slow justice and put pressure on professionals. At the same time, advances in technology—from AI-driven analysis to cutting-edge DNA methods—offer an incredible opportunity to solve cases more accurately and efficiently. Navigating both has allowed me to grow as a scientist, break barriers in the field, and create meaningful impact for the next generation of diverse voices in STEM and forensics.

Q

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Integrity, perseverance, and service are the values that guide both my work and personal life. In forensic science, integrity is essential—every analysis, every conclusion, and every decision must be accurate, ethical, and unbiased. Perseverance has carried me through challenges, from navigating a male-dominated field to overcoming resource limitations, and it continues to drive me to reach my fullest potential.

Service—to my community, to the pursuit of justice, and to lifting others as I climb—is equally central. I believe success is most meaningful when it creates positive change and opens doors for future generations. These values shape how I approach my work, mentor others, and live my life with purpose and impact.
