Her Story

About Sarah

I founded Survivors Rejoice after surviving a shooting five years ago where I was shot six times and my boyfriend Malik lost his life trying to save mine. That experience sent me on a deep healing journey where I realized that hurt people hurt people, but healing people help people. I wanted to create the safe spaces that I didn't see when I was hurting and when my family was hurting, so I decided to create them myself. Through Survivors Rejoice, I find survivors who've been impacted by gun violence and help them heal through holistic somatic approaches like yoga, sound baths, art therapy, and breathwork, really just helping the mind, body, and soul get aligned again. My day-to-day work involves outreach to local facilities and trauma-informed care spaces, case management and resource coordination for survivors on our caseload, networking with holistic service providers in the community, and applying for grants to secure funding so we can better serve our survivors. One of my most rewarding moments was working with a survivor who wasn't able to physically leave their house for years due to their nervous system being overstimulated. Through the work we provided, they were able to gain power in themselves and their independence again, and seeing them leave the house, go to a grocery store, and find themselves again has been amazing. Seeing people get their lives back is just incredible.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Sarah

01What do you attribute your success to?

I would say God and my community. Out of my community, I felt like I found my purpose, so that definitely gave me hope.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I've ever received was to enjoy the process. You can't rush the process, you know?

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would just give a reminder that what's for you is for you. And if you know that, nothing can stop you. Because if the things that didn't come to you, we get deterred and disappointed and hurt. But it's really about understanding that if it wasn't for you, it wasn't meant for you. When it's for you, it's for you, and it's gonna work out the way it's supposed to. You can't rush the process.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge I face right now is funding. It's about getting funding placed in the community where it's actually helping the community. I have a great support team and community, but it's really just the funding that's the challenge right now.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Respect, for sure. Empathy. Just being good human beings, you know? It's so simple.
