Her Story

About Sarah

I've been in the background investigation industry for nearly 4 years, working as a background investigator for a company accredited with the Professional Background Screening Association (PBSA). I love what I do because I'm not just helping employers make smart hiring choices - I'm helping regular, everyday people get into positions they might not have had, whether it's a promotion or a new job. It's rewarding when you think of the big picture.

Ten minutes with Sarah

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to having an incredible mentor in my boss who believed in me from the start. She told me she gave me the job because I proved to her that I was honest, and that it didn't matter who I was, I would be who I am. One day she told me something I'll never forget: 'Sarah, I might have given you a chance, but I didn't give you this. You worked. You have fought your way to the top. You have earned everything.' She constantly encourages me and pushes me to be the best employee I can be. She taught me that you grow when you're not comfortable, and she knows that, so she pushes me. I couldn't have made it in this industry without her as a mentor. Beyond that, I've learned to be patient and trust the process. I've proven myself through hard work, honesty, and dedication.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I've ever received came from my boss. She taught me that you grow when you're not comfortable. She pushes me out of my comfort zone because she knows that's where growth happens. She also taught me to never bring a problem without at least two solutions. It's okay to have a problem, but at least try to find a solution to the problem, and then you can bring a problem. But what good is a problem if you're not trying to solve it? These lessons have been applicable to more than just my work - they've spread into my personal life as well.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Just don't give up. Don't be discouraged. A lot of people see the negatives and they allow that negative thing to overshadow everything.. So hold out and trust the process.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

There are plenty of opportunities for women in this industry, even though it's mostly male-dominated.Just be focused and remember the goal.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Honesty and integrity are fundamental to who I am.
