Her Story

About Shaketta

My typical day is different every day, but I'm always connecting with people in various ways. I spend my time connecting with hiring managers to make sure we're aligned with whatever part of the process we're on. I'm typically connecting with candidates, conducting interviews, and I spend time on LinkedIn reaching out to potential candidates and having lots of conversations online. Of course, there's also the back office boring stuff that's a necessary part of the job. What I'm most proud of professionally is being able to connect with people, even when it's challenging or difficult. I know how to really lock in with that person and get us back on the same page. I've been with my company for the last 15 years, starting from the bottom, and my career path has taken me from recruiter to senior recruiter, then to HR business partner for a while, and now I'm back as a senior recruiter. Throughout my journey, I've learned that every experience is a learning opportunity, a chance to network, and a chance to overcome something I've never been able to do before.

01What do you attribute your success to?

One of the things that I told myself when I first started at this company is I never say no. Never. This probably piggybacks off of my advice to young women entering the field, but it's been the foundation of my success. I've learned to take on any challenge or opportunity, even if I think it's not going to help at first, because every experience is a learning opportunity. It's an opportunity to network, it's an opportunity to learn something, even if it's just to overcome something I've never been able to do before. Everything is an opportunity, and I don't say no to anything. Even when I'm scared, especially when I'm scared, I do it. That willingness to embrace every challenge and never turn down an opportunity has been the key to my success over the past 15 years with my company.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I've ever received has to do with relationships, because we all have to have relationships with people, right? The best relationship advice that I have received that helps me on a day-to-day basis is knowing when to send an email, when to pick up the phone and call, and when to pay that person a visit, face-to-face. This advice has been invaluable in my work as a recruiter and HR professional, because understanding the right communication method for each situation makes all the difference in building and maintaining strong professional relationships.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

To be resilient, do not give up. Take on any challenge or opportunity, even if you think that it's not going to help. Take on any challenge, because every experience is a learning opportunity. It's an opportunity to network, it's an opportunity to learn something, even if it's just to overcome something that you've never been able to do before. Everything is an opportunity. Don't say no to anything. Even if you're scared, especially when you're scared, do it. I remember being discouraged over the years, but reading about people making breakthroughs in their career, or doing this or doing that, those are the things that really helped me know that I just need to stay on this path and get to where I'm trying to go. So my advice is to stay resilient and embrace every opportunity that comes your way.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values most important to me are being honest and transparent, having emotional intelligence, and knowing when to go back and apologize. These values guide me in both my professional work as a recruiter and HR professional, and in my personal relationships. Emotional intelligence helps me connect with people, even when it's challenging or difficult, and allows me to really lock in with that person and get us back on the same page. And having the humility to know when to go back and apologize is crucial for maintaining strong, authentic relationships.
