Her Story

About Shang

I've been working in the data science field for 6 years. After graduation, I joined a consulting firm to work as an analytics consultant for two years, where it was all about data analytics and consulting, helping our clients achieve advertising analytics solutions. I specifically found the data science part very interesting, which is why I joined Walmart as a data scientist. In my current role, I build machine learning and AI systems to automate operations in the company, and I use causal inference to drive decision science and scientific decisions for leadership in strategy. I'm really proud of being an excellent communicator who can communicate technical concepts or solutions to cross-functional teams, including non-technical leadership, executive leadership, and non-technical product managers. I bridge the gap between the deep technical world and the real-world decision makers.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I think first of all, it's much simpler than it seems, which is why the methodology and learning journey is probably much simpler, but the courage to take steps step-by-step is very important. I would attribute that to the love I received from my family, which keeps me going forward no matter what challenges I faced. I overcame them and continued to pursue my next endeavor, and that courage comes from appreciating the love from my family. Second, I think it's the curiosity and ambition from myself. I've also learned a lot from many mentors and many role models in this industry, and they are so nice and generous to give advice and offer help. That could include my first manager ever in my consulting firm, some of the great leaders I've worked with, and also many great leaders in the nonprofit career community I encountered. I've learned a lot from them.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I want to say to her, you have endless possibilities and potentials. Don't let anything limit you. Whenever you think of something, you want to keep something, do it. Try it out. Do the experimentation, try it out yourself. You will figure it out while building the things you really love.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

I think one of my very interesting areas is responsible AI. AI is everywhere and is being used in every org, in every company. But making sure it is really trustworthy and reliable is very important, and it's still an area that needs a lot of effort.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

I'm genuinely interested and I think good at making connections with people, like real connections. I also have a huge ambition or willingness to solve problems. Basically, I would say I'm a problem solver, and I value people connection and communication.
