Her Story

About Sharon

I'm a people person, so I couldn't imagine not having a job where I'm not talking to anybody. I like talking with people, dealing with people, and solving problems. I'm pretty talkative, and I like helping people and talking with them. For the most part, pretty much everybody's pretty nice - you just get a low percentage of people that have some issues. In my work, I deal with all sorts of people - happy, miserable, sad. You have to have patience with people, whether they're customers from another company yelling about their order, or a customer telling you their whole life history about somebody dying, or if they like to talk about politics. You've got to have patience with them and try to persuade them to get back on track with the subject. I'm very solution-oriented - I don't get panicky or anything like that. You just have to put things in perspective and order. You could be working on 5 different orders, plus taking a phone call, plus have three issues on the side, as well as everything else. I deal with what's most important first - if one order needs to go out in 2 days versus an order that might not be going out for another 3 months, obviously you're going to work on that order, resolve the situation, and work your way from there.

Ten minutes with Sharon

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to determination and never giving up on anything. For example, it took me 10 years to get pregnant. I was a fertility patient that had to go through 10 cycles of IVF, plus miscarriages. If you want to pursue something in life, you've got to go full force and go for it. You can't just sit back and say, you know what, I'm not gonna do that. If you really want to get something done and accomplish stuff, you have to move forward and do it. If I never pursued doing IVF, I never would have had a child. If you want to do something, you have to do it.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Just ignore the men - the men can be probably persuasive, more demanding. Follow your heart. You know, if you get a situation where you're not sure of anything, you've got to go with what you're thinking, the first thought, and pursue it. I don't like asking for help, but unless I only can't resolve the problem, then I would go for help from a co-worker, and it doesn't matter if they're a male or a female. But sometimes with men, they can be demanding, or showy, or whatever. But you just have to go with your heart, and if you have a question, or you're in a bad situation, you just have to be open and talk with them, and hopefully they respond the same as you're talking to them.
