Her Story

About Shavonne

I have two years of experience in the carbon black industry, currently serving as an Information Processor at Birla Carbon. Prior to this role, I spent eight years with Dow Chemical, where I began my career as a lab technician. During my final three years at Dow, I transitioned into a quality systems technologist position, taking responsibility for managing and improving the LIMS database. In that capacity, I supported the implementation of a new system, oversaw data management activities, and conducted in‑depth analyses to identify production trends, troubleshoot quality issues, and investigate problematic materials—all while continuing to perform laboratory testing.

My most significant professional accomplishment has been leading the transition to a new LIMS platform in my current role. This was the second major implementation I have been part of, but the first one I managed mostly independently from start to finish. I was responsible for extracting, restructuring, and importing all legacy data; mastering the new system; executing the implementation; and training approximately 30 colleagues at the Marietta facility as well as staff at our sister plant in India. I continue to maintain and refine the system as we approach the final stages of the rollout. The scope, duration, and level of ownership required for this project make it the achievement I am most proud of.

Today, my core areas of expertise include data management, trend analysis, and systems implementation within manufacturing and quality environments.

Ten minutes with Shavonne

01What do you attribute your success to?

I would attribute my success to my upbringing in a single-parent household by my mother. She always made sure to let us know that education is extremely important and it will get you far, and so to just stay focused and keep your eye on the prize. I would attribute my success, essentially, to my mother and the values she instilled in me about the importance of education and staying focused on my goals.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

In my previous role, I had a female leader whom I frequently sought out for guidance on navigating workplace dynamics, particularly as she managed relationships with her male counterparts in a leadership position. At the time, I was facing my own challenges, and her perspective was invaluable. She told me that people will see you the way they choose to see you, but what matters is showing up every day confident in your abilities and committed to doing your best. That advice has stayed with me and continues to guide me through difficult or complex situations in my career.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Don’t give up. Continue setting goals for yourself, and commit to following through on them. It can be tempting at times to step back or feel discouraged, but staying focused on your goals makes a meaningful difference. And just as important, don’t hesitate to ask for help. Seeking support is not a weakness—it’s a valuable skill that many people are reluctant to use. Reaching out when you need guidance is an essential part of growing and succeeding.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Because I am the sole person in my department responsible for this function, I often serve as the primary voice for approximately 30 internal stakeholders. Balancing a wide range of perspectives while still making decisions that support the broader organization can be extremely challenging. It requires navigating differing expectations, finding common ground, and ensuring that the overall direction remains aligned with what is best for the group as a whole.

At times, it can feel isolating, particularly because I work predominantly with men in leadership roles. As a woman in this environment, advocating for my position and ensuring my voice is heard can feel like an uphill battle. However, I remind myself that we are all working toward the same goals, and that my responsibility is to contribute my expertise and make the best decisions I can. Maintaining that perspective helps me stay grounded and confident, even in difficult moments. I would say this dynamic is the most challenging aspect of my role.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Integrity and honesty are core values that I strive to uphold in both my personal and professional life. I believe these principles have played a significant role in my growth and in the opportunities I’ve earned throughout my career. They guide how I approach my work, how I build relationships, and how I make decisions, and they have been fundamental to my success.
