Her Story
About Sherry
I was a college student athlete who had someone help me through my college career in terms of academics, so I wanted to give back and help students progress through college from the time they enroll throughout their tenure at the institution. The success part of it is that they graduate, and the even better part is that they get a job after they graduate. I've worked in community colleges, Division I institutions, and K-12 settings over my 20-year career. Today, as Coordinator of Retention and Student Success at Cabarrus College of Health Science, where I've been for 12 years, I handle everything related to student success - from onboarding students to helping them register, assisting them with accommodations, advising, early alerts, midterm alerts, dealing with their grievances and appeals, and ensuring they're engaged outside of the classroom as well as inside. I work with program chairs and deans to ensure students are successful. What I find most rewarding is the opportunity to see students come in and grow - watching them go through their college experience, learn, and grow as professionals in healthcare. It's really important work, so watching them grow into becoming exemplary healthcare professionals, trusting the process, and understanding all the elements of what it takes is incredibly fulfilling. At Cabarrus College, we instill core values like caring, commitment, and integrity, and I help students understand that at the end of the day, they're saving lives.

Ten minutes with Sherry
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to relationship building, communicating with people, being transparent, and being collaborative. Those are the key elements that have helped me throughout my career. Building strong relationships and maintaining open, honest communication with students, colleagues, and stakeholders has been essential to everything I've accomplished in this field.
02What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The core values that are most important to me in my work are caring, commitment, and integrity - these are values we strive for here at Cabarrus College for our students. I believe in doing what you say you're going to do and understanding that at the end of the day, in healthcare education, we're teaching people to save lives, so we can't take what we do lightly. I emphasize to students that if they can't have good time management now, they won't have good time management on the floor when a patient needs medicine or needs to be resuscitated. Being a good communicator and documenter is essential because in the hospital, if you didn't document it, it doesn't happen. These values of accountability, communication, and commitment drive everything I do.
