Dr. Silvia Vicenzi is a resilient and highly adaptable biomedical scientist with an international, interdisciplinary career spanning five countries and three continents. She holds a Ph.D. in Molecular Neurobiology, an M.Sc., and a micro-MBA, blending deep scientific expertise with business acumen. Her research has focused on neuroscience, immuno-oncology, aging, metabolism, and translational applications, leveraging diverse models from humanized mice to patient-derived cell lines. Silvia’s work has been recognized with over 25 awards and fellowships, reflecting her dedication to excellence, innovation, and scientific communication.

Currently serving as Business Development Manager at Biocytogen, Silvia connects researchers with cutting-edge gene-editing platforms, humanized mouse and cell models, and in vitro/in vivo pharmacology services. Previously, as a postdoctoral fellow at UC San Diego, she led translational studies in aging, stem cell biology, and immuno-oncology, independently securing funding, publishing high-impact work, and forging collaborations across academia and industry. Her research not only advances scientific understanding but also aims to translate discoveries into actionable therapeutic strategies.

Beyond the lab, Silvia is passionate about mentorship, community building, and advocacy for women in science. As Chair of the UC San Diego Postdoctoral Association, she supported over 1,500 postdoctoral scholars, spearheading initiatives for professional development, equity, and interdisciplinary collaboration. A recognized science communicator and leader, Silvia thrives at the intersection of research, innovation, and business, driving progress while empowering the next generation of scientists.

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced in my field is learning and applying soft skills while adapting to a new professional environment. Building strong relationships, communicating effectively, and navigating workplace dynamics are just as critical as technical expertise, and I’ve found that developing these skills opens doors to growth and new opportunities.

The values that guide me most in both my work and personal life are curiosity, staying true to my personal values, and pursuing learning that genuinely interests me. I’ve found that when my work aligns with what I care about and sparks my curiosity, it creates a more meaningful and fulfilling career.
