Her Story

About Stephanie

My journey in energy began right out of college when I opened a commodities brokerage and managed retail commodities trading. After seeing the collapse of the CDO market and soldiers being sent overseas for oil that didn't belong to us, I realized I wanted to do something better than the zero-sum game I was in, even though it was very lucrative. I took what I had and opened a business called We Are CNG, working with natural gas because I knew we had over 100 years of reserve and I looked at it as a bridge to cleaner, more zero-emission technologies like hydrogen and electric. I'm kind of an all-in kind of girl, so I flew my family across the country to Florida, sight unseen, no friends, no family, and we even sold our home. My husband is a mechanical engineer, so he got certified on the conversions for vehicles to run both bi- and dual fuel CNG with diesel and petro. I ran all the distribution for the CNG tanks, put together a couple of certification classes for the local junior colleges, and did CNG station development. Eventually I transitioned over to electric, working with Greenlots on the Volkswagen Electrify America program. I've been in the energy industry for about 23 years total. Currently, I'm focused on helping companies in the energy space with equity acquisition and funding, bridging the gap between companies that need liquidity and large international companies that acquire businesses.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to never giving up. That's not an option. Moving forward, don't give up. People have said I'm very persistent, but there's no other choice. You dust off, take a breath if you need to, take a break, then get back at it. But whatever it is, make sure you're passionate about it. Make sure it's something you really can't wait to get your fingers into. You really want to be able to jump out of bed in the morning and go do what you do. The challenges are that non-ending learning curve, and when I get them, I'm like, oh, here we go. But I remind myself that we're here temporarily. Don't put stuff off, just pick it up and do it. This is a journey. You don't know when your clock's gonna end.
