Suniya James

Assistant Director of Resettlement Programs
Refugee and Immigrant Self- Empowerment
Syracuse, NY 13201

Suniya James is a purpose-driven nonprofit leader, educator, and community advocate dedicated to empowering refugees, immigrants, youth, and underserved families. Currently serving in a leadership role at Refugee and Immigrant Self-Empowerment (RISE), she oversees resettlement and care coordination programs that help individuals navigate essential services such as healthcare access, insurance enrollment, education, and transportation. Her work focuses on building meaningful personal connections and ensuring that those she serves can transition into stable, dignified lives within their new communities.

Originally from Pakistan, Suniya began her career in education after earning a Master of Arts in English Literature and teaching at the undergraduate level. Motivated by her passion for community development, she founded an initiative focused on equipping underprivileged youth and women with practical life and professional skills. Through workshops in conflict resolution, computer literacy, resume writing, and income-generating programs such as sewing training, she helped individuals build confidence, independence, and sustainable livelihoods. Her early leadership experiences in youth programs and church outreach further shaped her commitment to servant leadership and social impact.

After relocating to the United States, Suniya continued her mission-centered work by volunteering with refugee resettlement programs before transitioning into professional leadership roles. She later established and led nonprofit efforts centered on holistic care coordination, connecting families with food resources, medical providers, and community support systems. Guided by her faith and a strong belief in the power of empowerment through education and service, Suniya remains dedicated to creating opportunities that foster resilience, dignity, and long-term success for the individuals and communities she serves.

Q

What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to faith-driven servanthood, humility in how I lead and serve others, and the strong support of my family, whose shared values inspire the impact I strive to make every day.

Q

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering this industry is to stay focused on your long-term goals and not lose sight of what you want to achieve, even when short-term social pressures feel overwhelming. It’s important to “be cool,” enjoy the present, and feel a sense of belonging, but always keep your future ambitions and purpose in clear view.

Q

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges in my field is that the needs of refugees and immigrants often exceed the available resources and support systems. At the same time, the complexity of the U.S. healthcare system creates an important opportunity to provide care coordination and navigation services that help new Americans access the services they need.

Q

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values most important to me in both my work and personal life are integrity, self-respect, and consistency in how I show up and serve others.
