Her Story
About Yvonne
I've been in accounting for over 5 years, and I'm currently in my second year focusing on business analytics, specifically healthcare analytics. I work as an accounting analyst at Xtel Financial Services in Louisville, where I've been for 9 months. In my typical day, I go through all the financials of the company, making sure everything matches the records and that the banks match what we have in the system. I also collaborate extensively with my teams on upcoming and ongoing projects. Since the company is located in New York and we have only the financial services in Louisville, I have a lot of communication with the team in New York and my colleagues here in Louisville to ensure the success of the company. Before moving to the U.S., I worked as a data analyst at Mama Lusi Kibaki Hospital in Kenya, where I oversaw all the claim requests for health insurances for patients and managed the finances. Due to the size of the hospital, we used to see around 5,000 patients in a day, and dealing with those large data sets motivated me to pursue my Master's in Business Analytics so I could analyze data to help organizations make better decisions. I'm also currently pursuing a professional certification in healthcare analytics, the CHDA (Certified Healthcare Data Analyst), which I'm looking forward to completing in the next 2 months.

01What do you attribute your success to?
I would say that in terms of success, I'm not really going for the titles. I think everyone wants the titles, but I really don't look at it in terms of wanting to achieve that title. It's just about growth and purpose and positivity and creating impact on other people's lives. I also believe that true success comes from continuously challenging yourself, being able to overcome the obstacles, and trying to be a better version of myself every day in my personal life and also in my career.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
The advice I would give to women who are coming into this field, or who are probably in the field, is to believe in their potential, embrace continuous growth, and never allow fear or doubt, or someone to tell you that you can't do this. Mainly analytics is viewed like it's a men-dominated field, but I believe as women we can do it, because some women have done it and they are succeeding and they are doing very well in the field and impacting people's lives. I would also tell them that the journey comes with challenges and setbacks and moments that are sometimes uncertain, but those experiences should never define their worth or their future. They should remain determined and persistent to what they want to achieve.
03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
I can say my biggest challenges right now, one of them is being an immigrant and trying to navigate being on F1 currently. Being able to navigate to those healthcare positions has been a bit of a challenge because when you do job applications and they see you're a student and you don't have a green card, the rejections are a bit high. I would also say another challenge in my journey is balancing between personal growth, pursuing those certifications, and the professional responsibilities sometimes, while adapting to new environments like when you get a new job and wanting to go for the bigger goals. In terms of opportunities, I think the U.S. has broadened the chances to grow, create impact, and inspire others through the journey. AI is just one of the big opportunities that I see here. I see it as an opportunity where I can be able to expand more on my knowledge and be able to create those models that can speed up things that if someone could do manually, they would take much more time. So I think technology and AI is just one of the big opportunities that I see here and looking forward to growing in my field.
04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
In my work, I would say the core values that I look for are integrity, continuous growth, resilience, and being purpose-driven in leadership. I believe in approaching both professional and personal life with honesty, accountability, and a willingness to keep learning. Through my journey, I've learned the importance of staying disciplined and committing to anything that you do, because if you do something without passion, you cannot be able to deliver the best that you can.
