Stick with what you love, stay committed, and network.

Charlotte Marie Jones has built an uncommonly versatile career that bridges the precision of Geographic Information Science with the fast-paced world of sports officiating. Based in Indianapolis, Indiana, she has spent over 26 years as an independent contractor, carving out a unique professional identity that combines technical expertise, athletic mentorship, and a commitment to developing the next generation of sports officials.

As a USSF Soccer Mentor, Charlotte provides guidance and technical feedback to grassroots referees during youth tournaments, drawing on her lifelong love of soccer and years of dedication to refereeing since finishing college. Her work extends across multiple sports, including officiating for NFHS basketball and IPS futsal leagues, as well as track and field. She holds certification as a Soccer Referee through the IHSAA Soccer Officials Certification program and maintains active memberships in both the Indiana Officials Association and Fall Creek Officials Association.

When asked what she attributes her success to, Charlotte points to her commitment to making sure players and parents have a positive experience. Her three degrees from Indiana University have given her a strong foundation to support everything she does. Those degrees represent an impressive academic journey: a B.A. in Geography, an undergraduate certificate in Geographic Information Science, and a second B.A. in Archaeology, Latin, and Visualization, all from Indiana University Indianapolis. She also studied at Butler University and has achieved professional proficiency in Ancient Latin.

Charlotte's technical work in GIS has made tangible contributions to environmental and archaeological projects across Indiana. She has created detailed maps for wetlands and archaeological sites using ArcGIS, contributing to projects for the Indiana Department of Environmental Management and Martin University. This combination of cartographic precision and archaeological knowledge allows her to support critical preservation and environmental management efforts.

My advice to young women entering my industry is to stick with what you love, stay committed, and take every opportunity to be out there and network.

Recognition for her multifaceted achievements came in 2023 with her induction into Marquis Who's Who in America. Earlier in her career, she received the High Honor for Academic Excellence Award from Indiana University in 2004. Beyond her professional pursuits, Charlotte has volunteered with Timmy Global Health, helping build homes for families in developing countries.

Her advice to young women entering her industry reflects the philosophy that has guided her own path: stick with what you love, stay committed, and take every opportunity to be out there and network. She values staying active, enjoying music, and maintaining a healthy, balanced lifestyle. As she notes, the best career advice she's ever received is to stick with what she does best. For Charlotte, that means continuing to mentor, officiate, and contribute her technical expertise across the diverse fields where her skills make a difference.
