An unwavering belief in my ability to reach my goals.

Emma Louise Carson brings an uncommon combination of analytical precision and creative vision to her work as a Senior Operations Research Analyst at the Bonneville Power Administration. At BPA, she leverages her expertise in mathematics, data analysis, and energy systems to optimize hydroelectric power generation and ensure efficient energy distribution across the Pacific Northwest. Her work spans critical programs including the Columbia River Treaty between the U.S. and Canada, Environmental Impact Statement Columbia River System Operation studies, and the Energy Imbalance Market Settlements Project.

The scope of her responsibilities requires frequent travel to dams across the U.S. and Canada, where she collaborates with PhDs and other professionals to model reservoirs, regulate water flows, and maintain reliable international water management relationships. She navigates one of the energy sector's most pressing challenges: the volatility of power markets impacted by supply fluctuations, demand shifts, extreme weather events, and policy changes.

Her path to this role reflects a career built on service. Before joining BPA, she served in the United States Navy as a Petty Officer 2nd Class, managing logistics for the Supply Department of the 8th Division and supervising a team of 16 sailors during deployments in the Middle East and Asia. She also taught college-level math courses at Western Technical College, supporting students in interdisciplinary programs. She holds a Master of Science in Mathematics from Emporia State University and a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

Her dedication to STEM education extends beyond the classroom. She volunteers as a Chemistry Lab Educator at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry, continuing her mission to inspire the next generation. Her achievements have earned recognition through multiple awards, including the Administrator's Excellence Award, the 2022 BPA Values Award, and the Phi Theta Kappa 2015 Gold Star Instructor Award, among numerous others spanning her military and civilian careers.

I never stopped believing in myself despite crushing challenges in the past. I followed my heart and pursued my goals. Where there is a will, there is a way.

When asked what she attributes her success to, her answer is direct: "I attribute my success to an unwavering belief in my ability to reach my goals. I draw strength from this belief when I face challenges." She credits the simple but powerful career advice, "Don't give up," and shares her practice of writing inspiring quotes and keeping them visible as daily reminders. Her Navy Boot Camp mantra, "Easy day, every day!" became a touchstone during difficult times.

It has been the theme of her entire life to inspire people and serve a mission larger than herself. Beyond her analytical work, she is also a musical artist and songwriter, creating music and songs in her spare time while authoring books. She describes feeling a strong calling to serve humanity, bringing love, hope, joy, peace, elegance, and beauty to the world through her diverse talents.
