From Rock Bottom to Role Model

The Story of April Doughtie

There was a time in my life when I was simply trying to survive. I was a single mother battling alcoholism, carrying the weight of my past, and trying to find my way through a world that sometimes felt heavier than I could handle.

I wasn't always the woman you see today.

I have known heartbreak, trauma, addiction, and the kind of pain that changes you forever. I have experienced loss that left me questioning everything, including losing my brother to a fentanyl overdose. I have faced physical challenges, chronic pain, and multiple surgeries that tested my strength in ways I never imagined.

But through it all, I kept fighting.

Ten years ago, I made a decision that would change the course of my life.

I chose sobriety.

Not because I suddenly had everything figured out. Not because life became easier. But because I wanted something different for myself and my children. I wanted to become a woman they could look up to, a mother they could count on, and someone I could finally be proud of when I looked in the mirror.

Recovery didn't erase my past. It taught me how to stop letting my past control my future.

I learned that strength isn't about never falling apart. It's about finding the courage to put yourself back together, even when you have no idea what the finished picture will look like.

I built a career, stepped into leadership, and discovered that the very experiences I once felt ashamed of could become the foundation for helping others. From managing businesses to becoming an operations team lead, I learned to trust my abilities and recognize the value I bring to the world.

But my greatest accomplishments aren't measured by job titles, money, or recognition.

They are measured by the woman I became when nobody was watching.

The mother who kept showing up.

The woman who refused to surrender to addiction.

The survivor who continued moving forward, even when her own body made every step difficult.

The person who learned that being vulnerable doesn't make you weak. It makes you human.

Today, I want to use my voice to make a difference. Through my story and my podcast, Mocktails and Meltdowns with April, I want to create a space where people can talk openly about addiction, trauma, recovery, and the messy reality of being human.

Because I know what it feels like to believe your life will never be anything more than the mistakes you've made.

And I know what it feels like to discover that you were wrong.

On October 18, 2026, I will celebrate ten years of sobriety.

Ten years of choosing myself, my family, and a future that once seemed impossible.

I am not celebrating ten years of a perfect life.

I am celebrating ten years of showing up for an imperfect one.

I am celebrating every difficult morning, every obstacle I overcame, every lesson that changed me, and every person who reminded me that I was worth fighting for.

Most importantly, I am celebrating the woman who refused to give up on herself.

I went from rock bottom to becoming a role model, not because I have all the answers, but because I am willing to share the truth about how I got here.

I want my children to know that their mother was never defined by her darkest days. I want other women to know that being a single mother, struggling with addiction, or starting over does not mean their story is finished.

And I want anyone who feels trapped in the life they're living to understand that change is possible.

My scars tell a story, but they don't get to write my ending.

My past is part of me, but it is not all of me.

I am a mother. A survivor. A leader. A woman in recovery. A woman with a voice, a purpose, and a story worth telling.

My name is April Doughtie.

I am ten years sober, and I am still becoming the woman I fought so hard to be.
