Sometimes You Don’t Need a New Life… You Need a New Perspective
How changing your perspective can transform your reality without changing your circumstances.
For a long time, I thought changing my life meant changing my circumstances.
I thought I needed things to go differently. I needed people to act differently. I needed certain doors to open. I needed to feel more confident, more prepared, more certain. And then I realized something that completely changed the way I move through life:
Sometimes your reality doesn’t need to change first. Your perspective does.
That doesn’t mean I believe in pretending everything is positive. I don’t.
Life can be hard. People can hurt you. Plans can fall apart. You can work your ass off and still not get the outcome you wanted. But I’ve learned that there is a space between what happens to you and what you do with it. That space is where your perspective lives.
The same situation can happen to two people and create two completely different outcomes. Not because one person had an easier life, but because they interpreted the experience differently. One person sees failure and thinks, I’m not capable. Another sees it and thinks, Okay. That didn’t work. What did it teach me? One sees rejection and thinks, Nobody wants me. Another thinks, That wasn’t my door. One sees someone else’s success and thinks, I’m behind.
Another thinks, If it’s possible for them, maybe I need to stop convincing myself it’s impossible for me. The circumstance is the same. The meaning we attach to it isn’t. And that meaning affects everything that comes after.
I’ve had to learn this in my own life.
As a wife, a mother, and a woman trying to build something of my own, there have been plenty of moments where I could have gotten lost in comparison, fear, frustration, or the feeling that I wasn’t doing enough. But eventually I stopped asking myself, “Why is this happening to me?” I started asking, “What am I going to do with this?”
That question gave me my power back.
Because I can’t control every circumstance. I can’t control what someone else thinks of me. I can’t control whether an opportunity works out. I can’t control whether life follows the plan I made in my head. But I can control how I respond. I can decide what something means about me. I can decide whether a setback becomes proof that I should quit or information that helps me move differently. I can decide whether fear gets to make the decision for me. And I can choose to stop looking at my life through a perspective that keeps me stuck.
That’s ultimately why I became passionate about coaching. I’m not interested in simply hyping people up. I want to help people get out of their own heads. I want them to question the stories they’ve been telling themselves for years. Because sometimes the thing holding us back isn’t a lack of ability. It’s the belief that we aren’t capable.
Sometimes it’s not that we don’t have options. We just can’t see them because we’re looking at the situation from the same angle we’ve always used.
And sometimes, the biggest shift isn’t changing your entire life. It’s changing the way you see the life you’re already living.
Perspective doesn’t erase reality.
It changes how you move through it.
And when you change how you move, you change the decisions you make.
When you change your decisions, you change your habits. When you change your habits, you change your direction.
And eventually, you look around and realize your reality has changed too.
That’s what I want people to understand.
You don’t have to become a completely different person to create a different life.
You may just need to stop looking at yourself, your circumstances, and your possibilities through an old lens. Change the perspective. Then watch what becomes possible.
