Her Story
About Amber
I've been working in technical writing for over 7 years now, and for the past 3 years, I've been writing as a contractor for different military infrastructures. Currently, I'm with SMS Data Group, where I've been for about a year. My main area of expertise is technical writing as a whole, whether it's procedural documentation, guides, SOPs, knowledge bases, and things like that. Day to day, my key responsibilities involve editing documentation - getting documents that come in that need to be edited and then published. It's very detail-oriented work. I started my career in customer support and had the opportunity to move into a technical writer role when the company I worked for tripled in size during COVID. I hold certifications in technical writing and project management, and I recently earned my CompTIA Security Plus certification less than a year ago, which I'm really proud of. I studied for over 6 months for that test, and it was really intimidating - I was convinced I was going to fail it since it's like a $500 test. But I ended up passing it, and I feel like it's helped me contribute in my position, being more effective and making sure I'm secure and have more understanding of compliance and things of that nature in this kind of environment.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
A lot of times, when you're afraid to do something, it means that you should push yourself to do it. Don't be intimidated by what you don't know yet. I feel like I've learned a lot on the way of my career. I started out in customer support and had the opportunity to move into a technical writer role when the company that I worked for tripled in size during COVID. So don't wait until you feel fully ready to grow - growth comes in steps, and take that opportunity. And never underestimate your value, either. I feel like a lot of people have imposter syndrome, or they doubt themselves, and just remember, you know, you can do it. You don't need to have everything figured out to get started - take the jump, take the leap. The worst that happens is you fall and you get back up.
