Her Story

About Amie

My role has definitely evolved from where I started. Now I am a voluntary benefit consultant, helping employers really design their benefits and helping employees with ancillary products that they really need anyway, but can save money or help them out financially. I have clients that are employers with 5,000 to 100,000 employees. My day is never the same, it's always different. A lot of times my days are just helping them understand the benefits, understand if there's gaps in their coverage, educating them, and just really making sure that they understand they have an extension of their team and that we're here to really guide them and help them. I think of my day kind of as always a puzzle, so I go into various clients and it's like, okay, what's happening today? What are you experiencing? What are you seeing, and how can I help you? Then I partner with them and help however I can, whether it be add an offering, change an offering, or looking for opportunities within my network of benefits to help absorb costs or help their employees.

01What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best piece of advice I got was don't take things personally. My role is very much relationship-based, and things happen. You could have a really great relationship with a client, things are going well, and then due to circumstances beyond your control, they decide to go a different avenue. So just not taking that personally and understanding there's much bigger things that happen that influence an employee or a client's decision to make changes, or when they're upset also. You've got to kind of take it with a grain of salt, but it's not necessarily at you, it's the circumstances.

02What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

I really think one of the challenges is the industry is always evolving and changing, so staying up on regulations and employers' goals and expectations are always changing as well. This year, they're really seeing a big impact in health insurance increases, so just helping guide them in some of these challenging times and looking for opportunities to still show value in their benefits and help attract and retain employees. GLP-1s are big right now, so looking for opportunities within my network of benefits to help absorb some of that cost or help their employees if that's something they want and the employer can no longer offer. It's just always changing and just keeping up on the market.

03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

I'm very passionate about helping people, guiding them, and just really coaching them. I mean, I really see myself here just helping educate. As far as values, I just love helping people.
