Her Story

About Amy

I graduated from Northeastern University in 1985 and relocated to Connecticut, where I began my career at Electric Boat. Early on, I recognized my desire to transition from a desk-based role into the medical field. While pursuing a career as a physician was not the right fit, I was strongly motivated by a commitment to patient care and a desire to contribute meaningfully to healthcare. That led me to the pharmaceutical industry.

I joined Pfizer in 1991, where I spent over 20 years building the foundation of my career. During that time, I balanced significant personal responsibilities, including raising my children and navigating a divorce. The flexibility of the role allowed me to be both a dedicated parent and a committed professional focused on ensuring innovative therapies reached physicians and their patients.

In 2012, I was impacted by a workforce reduction after a long tenure with the organization. While initially unexpected, that transition became a pivotal moment in my career. It opened the door to new opportunities and allowed me to expand my experience across both large pharmaceutical companies and emerging biotech organizations.

Today, I work in the oncology space, with a focus on lung cancer, an area that is deeply personal to me, as I lost my mother to the disease 30 years ago. I’ve had the opportunity to support the approval of a therapy for metastatic non-small cell lung cancer with a HER2 mutation, helping to bring forward new treatment options for patients.

What I find most meaningful is the impact on patients’ lives. Advances in treatment have transformed outcomes, allowing many individuals to live longer and maintain a higher quality of life. Seeing patients reach important personal milestones underscores the significance of this work and reinforces my commitment to the industry.

Ten minutes with Amy

01What do you attribute your success to?

I’ve been successful because I focus on being useful in every role I take on learning the science deeply, understanding stakeholder needs, and solving problems that matter. That approach has allowed me to progress through multiple positions within organizations and consistently contribute at a higher level.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best advice I’ve received and what’s guided my career is perseverance grounded in integrity. In this field, it’s easy to feel discouraged. You face rejection, skepticism, and at times unfair assumptions whether it’s not being taken seriously or misconceptions about the industry. But I’ve learned not to let that noise define how I show up.

For me, success has been about staying focused on the bigger picture: doing the right thing, operating compliantly, and continuing to move forward even when it’s difficult. There will always be setbacks, but how you navigate them matters. I’ve made a conscious decision not to compromise who I am to get ahead. You can be respectful, authentic, and still be highly effective.

I’ve also learned the value of resilience through experience. When I was let go from Pfizer after many years, it felt like a major setback in the moment. But it ultimately opened doors to opportunities I wouldn’t have otherwise considered, and it reshaped my career in a positive way.

At the end of the day, I believe in staying true to yourself, continuing to learn, and approaching challenges with a long-term perspective. Not every door will open but if you stay consistent and keep moving forward with integrity, the right ones will.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would encourage young women entering the industry not to underestimate their capabilities. The skills that drive success prioritization, resilience, adaptability, and emotional intelligence are incredibly valuable in this field.

It’s important to be clear about your goals, set appropriate boundaries, and advocate for yourself. This is a demanding and competitive industry, but it also offers significant opportunity for growth. You don’t have to compromise who you are to succeed authenticity, consistency, and a strong work ethic go a long way.

Above all, stay confident in your ability to navigate challenges, continue learning, and create your own path. Over time, those qualities will differentiate you and open doors.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges in our industry right now is access. The space has become increasingly crowded, with more representatives and more therapies competing for limited physician time. Many offices especially in oncology have significantly restricted in-person access. What used to be an open-door environment has shifted to highly controlled interactions, making it much harder to deliver meaningful education.

This is particularly pronounced in oncology, where providers are already managing extremely high patient volumes. If they gave every representative time, it would take away from patient care. As a result, the traditional sales model doesn’t work the way it used to, and success now requires a more strategic, creative approach to engagement whether that’s through digital channels, coordinated touchpoints, or delivering value in more targeted ways.

At the same time, there are real opportunities in the industry. The growth of smaller biotech companies and the continued development of specialized therapies especially in rare disease and oncology are creating new entry points and career paths. For professionals who can adapt to this more complex environment and focus on high-value interactions, there’s significant room to grow.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

At the core, I value integrity, trust, and people development. I believe in doing the right thing, even when it’s not the easiest path, and in building relationships grounded in respect and transparency. I also place a strong emphasis on helping others grow, recognizing strengths, supporting development, and creating an environment where people feel valued and motivated to do their best work
