Her Story

About Bailey

I'm currently in my master's program at the University of Tennessee, where I've been working in the sports psychology space going on three years now, starting from my undergrad days. My day-to-day is a little different than the rest of the students because I have so many roles - I really appreciate my graduate institution right now because they kind of just give me free reign. The way I get to work with these teams is really just by networking myself. I've gone through and have target areas that I want to hit. My main focus is the motorsports industry, and right now my main role is with Rocky Top Racing, which is a brand new racing team for UT. They just launched, and I just did my thing and networked with them, and then got a role with them. They're super excited to have me. Im working on making a connection with someone in Formula One, so really just being around the people that I want to set myself up with. I’m super excited to be around people who believe in what I’m there to do and can’t wait to work more with the drivers. My main goal is to be in the Formula One space. I also work in sexual assault education as my 40-hour a week job since December, and I've been doing site directing for youth sports since October. I love cars - any type of car - and I've been playing sports since I could walk, which really led me into my career path.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Bailey

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to the people around me that keep saying that I can do it, and I'm doing the right thing, and commending me, honestly. I'm very thankful to be surrounded by a good group of people who support me through everything I'm juggling.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best piece of advice I've ever received is don't be afraid to make mistakes. I got told a lot to fail forward, and that's really stuck with me throughout my journey.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Just say yes to everything, even if it doesn't align with what you want to do right now, or where you think you're gonna go. There might be a different opportunity in something that doesn't serve you right now, but just say yes to everything, especially when you're young.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

I would say the biggest challenge is confusion - people don't really know what sports psychology is or what that really means. Every time I say I'm a sports psychologist or a mental performance consultant, people have no idea what I'm talking about. It's always like, 'that's super cool! What is that?' But the biggest opportunity for sports psychologists is the huge range that we have. I don't think people realize - they just get hung up on the sport part and think we obviously only work with sports. We can work with any team. We work a ton with the military, in hospitals making sure that surgeon teams are working together well, we work with musicians a lot, we're even in gaming sometimes, the gaming space, which is a little odd to me, but we can be anywhere.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

I would say loyalty, for both home life and workplace. And just love and kindness, I think, is a big one, especially in today's world.
