Her Story
About Brittany
I entered the commercial insurance industry about four and a half years ago after staying home to raise my children. I started at NFP in small commercial insurance, which was a great experience, but I was looking to expand and grow. That led me to Hub International, where I got into middle market risks, which are higher revenue, higher stake risks. After about a year, I joined the Baldwin Group as a Client Manager, where I now manage extremely high-revenue real estate accounts on a national and international scale. My main areas of expertise are commercial real estate and commercial construction risks, with a particular focus on multifamily commercial real estate. What I'm most proud of is my ability to manage large revenue portfolios while excelling at client retention and relationship building. I'm great at connecting with clients and seeing beyond just the sale. Being able to keep and retain clients is truly everything in this industry. This career has been unexpectedly welcoming to me as a woman, and it has allowed me to provide a life for my children that I never imagined possible as a single mom.

01What do you attribute your success to?
It seems so cliche to say that it's my kids, but it truly is. I found out I was pregnant with my fourth son after my separation from my ex-husband, and I raised him alone. At that time, I made $16 an hour and had a fourth kid on the way and three others, and I had nothing. It's those moments where you can shatter and let that victim mentality take over, or you can rise to the occasion. Within 2 weeks of my maternity leave with my fourth child, I was licensed in insurance. He was crying, I was crying from exhaustion, but from there, I just keep driving myself to do better and do more. At the end of the day, it shows them that I value my success as a professional, not just mom. It has allowed me to provide a life for them that I would have never imagined. Four years ago, I couldn't buy them a Happy Meal. Now I just bought my own home with my fiance. It really is wanting to do better and be more, not only to support my children, but so that they can see a strong female and that they can see that women can do everything they want to do as well. We are so capable.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
This is an industry that was so unexpectedly welcoming to me as a female. I think sometimes as women, we see these more male-dominated industries and we're a bit more hesitant to step into them, but it is so welcoming. At the end of the day, if you can show that you care and you are willing to put in the work, you're willing to get the designations, and you're willing to go the extra mile, this is an industry where you are truly unstoppable. I entered the industry after my long-term ex-husband and I separated. I hadn't worked in 10 years, and it allowed me to provide a life for my children that I never imagined myself being able to do as a single mom. There's no limit to what you can do as far as income, and there's so much more you can always learn. If you're looking for growth and flexibility, most of these positions are remote, so if you are a mom or someone who's trying to do it all alone, it lends a hand to that. You will be judged based on your work, nothing more. I've had no other experience in it. It's been lovely, everyone's been great, and it's allowed me to become more confident in myself outside of just being mom.
